is the i7 necessary for gaming?

Future-proofing is for people with money to burn. Get what you need now, and get what you need in the future, in the future. Prices always come down, and you can sell on the parts you replace.

Having said that I bought a triple-core CPU - it's the perfect processor for people who like to sit on the fence :p

Nope!

But it's a load of fun !!!

As a footnote:

I've just about finished a Phenom II X4 955/HD5770 build for a buddy and on initial switch on it looks like a great "gaming" machine and compared with mine I'm quite envious ! :)
(will be looking to Big.Wayne's threads to commission tune this baby up :))

i`d got for the best chip at the moment for the budget you have at the moment.

if you get a i5 750 oc to 4.2 then you are laughing. but don`t forget that it is the gpu that you need to upgrade more than anything.

if you have a good budget say over £1300, you can get a very powerful system, with the following

750 PSU make sure that it is a good effiecent one. cost a little bit more but it is worth it in terms of your leccy bill and keeps your mobo stable.

a good mobo keep the cpu and ram good. a oc bundle from ocuk will be the best bet.

a good cool case. see case cental http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=5

graphic card is up to you. but a min is hd5770

anything else you want to add is upto your self.

Get an i3 and overclock it to 4.2 or 4.4ghz.

best 80 bucks you'll spend on a PSU.

Or CPU for that matter.

If I was to build a gaming PC and had a choice of spending my money on either:

Core i5 750 - £145 and Radeon 5770 - £115

or

Core i3 530 - £80 and GeForce 460 1GB - £175

I'd go for the latter. It would also allow me to use a lower end cooler to overclock to 4GHz+.

However, if you use your machine for anything else, you have to consider other options. Phenom II 955 can be build reasonably cheaper than Core i5 and will offer similar performance in most tasks. You can buy a cheaper mobo for it too and get a pair of slightly cheaper RAM sticks because of unlocked CPU multiplier.

@up

My Core i5 750 won't OC to 4GHz without bumping hell lot of voltages to it.

i7 isnt neccesarry for gaming, but, if youve got one your sorted, good mutiple gpu support, unlike amd's latest offerings, least with i7 you have the choice of multi gpu set ups.
