is the NZXT 500 still a decent case

For the price (non 'i' version without all the RGB gubbins) you won't really find a much better case in terms of what can fit inside it & temperatures, so it really only comes down to the aesthetics of it, which is a totally subjective thing.

...for anything better, you really need to step up to the £90-£120 price range

Is the 500 the successor to the 340? if so I love the 340, although I believe the default cooling configuration leaves something to be desired (1 rear 120 and 1 top 120) I personally on the 340 went with 2 140 front, 1 120 rear.

I bought this case recently and really like it so far. It looks great, is very easy to build in and the thermals aren't as bad as some people say, but then again I have a fairly mid range spec and I'm not doing any crazy overclocking. The two stock fans both suck air out of the case and actually do quite a good job, I will try adding 2 extra fans to the front at some point but I've read it doesn't actually make much difference the temps.

Running a Ryzen 1700 OC on all cores to 3800GHz, Stays cool in the NZXT H500 case at 1.338 volts temps around 39c idle 55/58c under gaming load
Almost 1700 points in CINEBENCH R15.038_RC184115 almost up there with 2700x
