I'm not sure whats the best chipset to get for conroe. I like the look of the Asus P5B Deluxe WiFi 965 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Not to be confused with the more expensive P5W. Will this be a good motherboard? it should at least support conroe out of the box as it hasnt been released yet.

Gigabyte GA965P-DS3 is proving to be good, giving 500 fsb

performs exceptionally well with the Allendale,
not many reports with the Cornoe but might have a 400 bus wall (from XS)

So does anyone know what the best chipset is?

Im looking at the Badaxe which uses - 975x express chipset or the 965 express chipset. Is the 975x better? I cant seem to find out. :)

Well I've got an Asus P5B on order....have I made the right choice? We will have to see..... :p

Will take pics of the board and the bundle....but thats about all I can do until get my CPU! *hint hint ocuk*

they are just different, yet to be seen which is better. one review i've seen, forget which one unfortunately, had both a 965 and 975x both tested with same chip, there were a couple benchies where one would be 2-3% ahead, and another test where the other one would win by the same amount. but most were within error margins between them.

yet to be seen which might overclock furthest or more stably. there might end up being little difference between the chipsets. people are working on a 975/965 tweaker just like there was between 865/875 chipset. at the moment a conroe boots in with a 1066 strap, essentially it sets a certain divider to set the northbridge speed and also sets mem controller latencys tight or slack. if you use the 1333 strap you can overclock higher as it will set a bigger divider meaning the chipset won't be overclocked as high, gives you more fsb overhead, but it slackens timings and does cost performance clock for clock. so at the moment the idea is to get the fsb overhead but retighten the timings using a tweaker. not sure if the timings are even tighter at the 800fsb strap, might be able to increase performance even further.

Thats excellent onfo there drunkenmaster thanks. I was thinking of getting a board with the 975x chipset but see some atractive alternatives in the p965 boards. Seems like we'll just have to wait and see as per. I would like a bios and capable chipset with regards to overclocking though, even though I'll prolly be only ocing about 200 - 400mhz at the most.

Well, the Asus P5B came this morning, and as promised I took some (very bad) pictures. I'm afraid thats all I can do at the moment unless one of those lucky......people... ( ;) ) would like to give me one of their X6800s :p

Pictures are quiet large and are all located HERE

Now, I did take a picture of the bundle outside of the box - but all I got on the picture was a large black shape in front of the camera  The bundle is nothing to shout about and includes all the usual bits and pieces you would expect.

The 965 chipset does not seem to support Xfire which, by extension means it may not support ATI's physics-using-a-graphics-card thingy either. At least that's my theory :p

So if this is important to you, you may need to go for another chipset over the 965.

They are going to be using a seperate card. But I can't see myself getting one for a while yet. When I do, I will just upgrade my mobo then.
