Is the PC closer graphically compared to "Next Gen" this time round than ever before?

there has never been a better time to be a pc gamer consoles are just not worth anyone's time these days and will continue to drift towards irrelevancy.

But isn't that one of the key things about PC gaming - higher resolutions and better quality? In every of the many PC vs. console threads that pop up on this forum that's what people spout out. That and being able to build a gaming PC that can match current gen consoles for peanuts (which is so obviously untrue!). If I'm going to lower the details and enjoy the ride, why not do it on the consoles? I'd probably enjoy the ride more knowing that the game couldn't run any better, rather than watching it struggle on my £1000+ gaming rig.

The way i think about it, my "gaming" PC costs exactly the amount of my graphics card, which is lets say £250 i think when i bought it new.

If for example i played only on consoles, i would have the exact same setup, except i would not have a GPU.

So, i wouldn't say a gaming PC costs £1500 and that a console costs £450. I still need/want a PC, i just wouldn't have a GPU.

The point of PC gaming is far beyond graphics, a good point is about modding, i've spent most of my gaming time on mod's, nearly every single game i play i have mods installed, world of tanks for example, i have so many mods, from sounds, to interface.

I play only multiplayer games, single player does not even interest me, it is not challenging to play against AI's, the only way to make AI's hard is to give them double HP or whatever, or make them cheating or other bonuses. There are some co-op games i play sure, but i prefer PVP.

I play with others and use teamspeak, the people i play, i have played with for years now. Im not sure what system you have for this on the console, (in game voip doesnt count), sometimes we say, hey check out this game, and then we play that. Hell even transport tycoon deluxe.

I Like to play in larger scale games, 32vs32, 64vs64. We have usually 50+ people on teamspeak at the same time. It just a completely different experience.

The fact that with PC's you can spend a lot of money and have amazing graphics and multi screen setups is one of the smallest advantages to PC gaming. Most games i love and play a lot do not have good graphics in the first place, some of them are old. And for most of them the graphics do not even matter.

Sure i went to my friends house and played some streetfighter or whatever its called on PS3, was fun for 1 hour before we were drunk enough to go out to bars. But that's the extent of console gaming for me.

I'd say the new consoles are about as powerful as a midrange PC at the moment. But that PC is infinitely more customizable and upgradeable. In a year or two's time PC will leave consoles far behind again as they did last time and as they will next time. The only way to counter this is to make consoles upgradeable or shorten their lifespan, but then that destroys the whole point of having consoles in the first place...

They have their place, but they are not more powerful then a PC.

People say that console gaming is cheaper but i'm not so sure. I have heard many people getting the xbone lately and spending £700+ on extra controllers and games. Admittedly it's launch prices and will come down over time but not by that much.

I haven't spend that much on my PC for many years. Nearly all my games I get are under £10.00 and hardware upgrades is few and far between these days. Even if I upgrade my graphics card then I trade my old one in so your only looking at around £200.00. I think your average pc gamer is about even with consoles with only the hardcore pc gamers spending the extra cash.

yea building my son a pc he needs everything kb , mouse etc.

so far I spent around £800 (just need a monitor)

but that's with a 3.2 ghz haswell and a 280x and a £70 case not the cheapest gaming pc I could build

Depends if graphics is your main focus on gaming, games like The Last of Us are brilliant and tbh the graphics were very very good given the consoles age. Of course they can't compete with a modern PC but they have other things going for them with the social side of things, more players to come up against generally and the games on a whole are usually much better optimized for release (won't be the case atm with the consoles being new though).

If you discard graphics then PC games really aren't any better than any console game with the exception of games that are modifiable.

I was going to get one of the new consoles but it really feels the consoles are just trying to play catch up this time round, upgrading my pc has priority now for me, it really is a no brainer, you can't seriously expect a £400 console to compete with a multi gpu high end £2000+ gaming pc, can you? :D

I cancelled my PS4 pre-order last week. Nothing excites me on either console.

Although I have to say that KZ: Shadow Fall and Deep Down look better than anything I've seen on PC.

re: £400 vs £2000+ pc

The PC and consoles kept up quite well last gen. Once you remove the higher res textures and frame rate, nothing really came out on PC that left the consoles behind. The games were a bit prettier but nothing beyond that.

You could say that's down to the older consoles holding PC back, but even games which were released exclusively on PC didn't do much new.
The difference is that the PC you bought when the consoles were playing Oblivion and Halo 3 had to be upgraded to keep up, while it's the same consoles playing Skryim and Halo 4.

i find the non gaming stuff abit interesting, the tv stuff on xbox explains the non event that media center on windows 8 was (no changes or made worse), as those guys must have been working on the xbox stuff.

gaming wise theres only one sort of compelling game (forza).

and 3 years ago nearly ( dec 15th), amd launched the 6970, which is very close to xbox one performance, and if you got a 6950 flashed to 6970 @ 200quidish like i did.... not bad value :D

The only good thing about the graphics being better at launch is we might actually start getting decent ports this time.

Imao, "we might get better port overs this time", its like getting the left overs from a Sunday dinner.

If you want to play port overs why not just buy a console and be done with it.

What we the PC gamers want, is games developed for the PC to make proper use of are Hardware, not left overs. Look what you can pay for just a GPU alone, a Titan about £900 that's two new PS4 consoles.

Is the consoles graphically close YES.

I saw a PS4 being played in GAME yesterday. Someone was playing FIFA 14.

Just looked the same as the previous PC FIFA's at 1080p.

I must say this generation of consoles has the most underwhelming graphics "leap" I have ever seen.

On the one hand perhaps it will improve the quality of some ports, but given that developers are likely to see this as a huge cash cow where they can just take any game from the PS3/XB360 gen (or earlier) and update it a little bit they can sell it again as the "Next-Gen" version...

Hooray!!! Decent ports of games which we already probably paid for a terrible port of previously!!!

As for new games - just because it's easier to build the games for the PC as well now does not mean that developers will bother to spend any time taking advantage of the extra power PCs have, just like they don't now... The technical innovations which might come about in certain engines and things as next-gen pushes forward may be worthwhile when a PC loyal developer makes good use of them, but as soon as that happens expect any games being transferred across from the consoles to look very weak very quickly in comparison

Having just tried out Killzone on a friends system and a top spec TV I have to say it looks just as good as any of the top PC games out atm graphics wise, Crysis, Metro etc etc and was wonderfully smooth.

Very impressed for a launch title as well.

Don't forget that Killzone was specifically designed for the PS4 and is a flagship game so the smoothness was expected. I will be interested to see how the rest of the games run, especially the 3rd party games as the PS3 had terrible frame rates on a lot of games. I was really disappointed with both PS3 and XBOX360 for frame rates so lets hope this time around they nail it.

Console gamers are getting what we as pc gamers have had for many years now high res graphics at 60 fps. So there is a lot of hype. I can see them releasing a lot of older games on consoles just because they are now capable of running at 1080p and for a quick cash in.

However consoles are already behind imo with 120 MHz monitors becoming more the norm these days.

I can run bf4 at ultra at over 120 fps granted I have spent a lot of money to do this but at the same time 400 pound + for the new consoles isn't exactly cheap. But I rather pay the extra on a money beast gaming pc for imo the better experience.

The graphics gap might be smaller but you could have said the same thing when the xbox 360 first came out.

I was tempted to get a new console but all the hype and cringe worthy adverts I just upgraded my pc instead :)

The only game I really want on either console atm is forza 5 its not worth the 400 quid + to play it imo

P.s do you still have to pay for stuff like xbox live ?

This!

Pc's just offer more functionality, My pc is my gaming machine my media player music player , my cd collection, word processor, my internet explorer.

Although more expensive i think pc's offer more value for money!
