is the ps3 graphics chip better than the x360's

I recall reading the Sony intended the Cell chip to handle the graphical duties and went to Nvidia at the last minute for a GPU.

Either way, you'll find the RSX better at some situations than the Xenos and the Xenos better than RSX at others.

Microsoft also control DirectX, and the xbox is not limited to DX9 technology. Where as the PS3 Nvidia counterpart i believe is limited to DX9 as its based upon it, theoretically.

Could be a major xbox advantage with PC ports like crysis!

possibly.

The 360 isn't limited to any version of Direct X that we know of on the pc. It uses its own custom version (a mix of 9/10 etc).

From the looks of it both will provide equal looking games (espexially cross platform) but each will have their own unique titles which may look better than each others.

The PS3 should be better, they're gonna have an extra 6months. PS3 is already a instant best seller in Japan anyway, as far as they are concerned it doesnt matter if it isnt much better.

My mates the kind of person who is a total and utter Playstation fanboy, He yabbers on about the Cell processor and how it's going to blow everything away. It annoyes me and for this reason alone I hope it flops. :)

The best place to research this subject is over at the forms of beyond3d, as they're a very tech savvy bunch over there, with many industry insiders.
The concensus of opinion is that the RSX is slightly less powerful (ATI being more consistant in performance, but the RSX have a faster potential maximum). However, this is highly dependant on the specifics being rendered and the competency of the programmer and whether the programmer utilises the gfx chips strengths.
Another thing to bear in mind is that, as mentioned earlier, it is believed that the Cell chip was originally planned to be the gfx processing, and although RSX has been included, it is still believed that the Cell will be able to do a lot of the gfx processing in parallel with RSX.

at the end of the day the majority of games will be multiplatform, hence the GFX will be as good on each as the game will be a port from the lowest Spec system

i thought the PS3 was going to use OpenGL (ES)?? maybe i am wrong, but i know the PS2 didnt use DX.

It'll be OpenGL. OpenGL-ES is for Embedded Systems and is heavily cut down (and uses fixed point values instead of floating point).

are we not nearing the stage where graphics will become photorealistic?

There's a long way to go yet. I look forward to seeing what the 360 and PS3 are capable of in a few years time though, when developers are learning to really ring the best out of the machines.

I would have thought they would use a proprietary API. I have no evidence of that I just don't think sony would rely on specs put down by other companies/organisations. Does anyone whether they use proprietary APIs or things like OpenGL?
