After having 2 of my 7200.11's die on me with no warning in the space of 2 weeks... there seems to be a higher than normal failure rate emoung forum users for the Seagate drive!

My first drive failed after PC rebooted for no reason - it spun up, but was not seen by bios. Second drive that failed was its replacement that was only 2 weeks old... it died in same way.

Could this be the new IBM deathstar?

My 2 drives died the same way!

I took controller card from my other "alive" 7200.11 and drive was then scene, however the drive was still dead.

I think its something in the controller card going - but once it goes it takes out the drive as well :(

One Seagate 7200.11 lasted 5 months before reboot of death

Another 7200.11 died after 2 weeks with reboot of death

Last night my 3rd 7200.11 had a reboot of almost death - managed to get it working again.

My 4th 7200.11 has been working flawlessly since Dec 07 so is my oldest Seagate. It has alwas been quieter than my other 3 7200.11's. The print out on the drive also looks different than the other 3.

All have been running off the same pc - which also uses a samsung and maxtor drive thats remained rock solid!

We dont know that yet as the Deathstar took time to die! First few months of release the 7200.11 were considered rocksolid rebillity wise... its only now we getting loads of probs.

*Cough* Hitachi

Agreed. Looking at replacing my pair, not sure what to get. Samsung F1s had an iffy patch when new which leaves WD and Hitachi. I'm thinking Hitachi.

oops I mean Hitachi (still IBM to me)

My local computer shop which is a major etailer for the UK, their returns department say they would not touch a spinpoint, but If you want something ultra reliable go Hitachi - my not be the fastest but they just work!

One more failing Seagate. I bought a 500GB 7200.11 a couple of weeks ago and it's showing problems already. It spins up and the BIOS detects it fine, but once Windows has booted there's only a 50% chance the drive is picked up. The three other drives in the system (2x WD and a Samsung) work fine, so not a system issue.

I'm debating whether to send it to Seagate or just bin the thing. It's a hot, noisy piece of trash, not sure I actually want a replacement :(

RMA is - get a brand new sealed drive - sell as new on ebay - get some money - by WD!

Remember guys, hardly anybody randomly makes a thread about how good these drives are, they only make a thread if they're having problems ;)

That goes for everyone on every forum.

Ive had 5 of these drives now and only 1 (first one I got) still works... all the rest has died in the same way.

This is not a good drive... forget about its steller performance, one cant trust the 7200.11 anymore.

Just bought a Samsung F1 as Im not going get a 5th Seagate 7200.11.

I think some people are confussed how these drives die. Its not the useral click of death, the computer suddenly reboots and the drive is no longer seen in the bios.

My last 7200.11 I was checking with HDtune which reported no errors right untill its sudden death!

I cant trust these drives anymore.

Just taken back my last dead seagate to the shop I got it from. The returns department gave me a tough time as it was my 3rd dead seagate 7200.11. They said I was the only person to have returned this drive and they have never heard of my problem and say they are in daily contact with seagate.

They went on to say its my rig causing this problem. However, they could not answer back when I said each time the HD has failed its been on different conectors and my other 3 HD's have been unaffected.
