hi all,

Ordering a new system soon (i7 860, 5850, 4GB ram) so i was looking at win7. Decided on the business edition cos i'd like the insurance of a xp emulation mode, but on the subject of 32bit / 64bit i'm not so sure.

Is there any reason not to get 64bit win7 business edition?

Thanks :)

IIRC you get both 32bit and 64bit editions with Win7 installation

I'd install 64bit personally, the drivers need to be for 64bit but they shouldn't really be that difficult to find.

Only reasons not to install 64bit are if you don't have a 64bit capable processor, or if you rely on software or hardware that won't work with a 64bit OS.

You get both 32bit and 64bit media with retail editions of Windows 7, your installation will be one or the other.

I would install the 64 bit personally, most software (not saying all) will run fine. It's not just the memory limit problem with 32, windows typically acts a little more secure / faster with 64.

I used to have Vista 32-bit. And I'm glad I've changed to 64-bit with Windows 7 RTM. And that's what I will be installing come 22nd October when my Home Premium arrives.

Most things work on 64-bit now. Even some games have 64-bit executables instead of 32-bit. The only confusing thing, is having two program files folders. One for 64 bit software (called Program Files) the other for 32 bit software (called Program Files (x86)). But you get used to it. What with the memory capacity etc. There is no point going 32 bit anymore. Even Office will be 64 bit soon.

I've installed the 64bit version on my laptop, but there are some drawbacks - but I'd rather use it if I can - some of my older software (which is often abandon ware so no updates) - doesn't work - some I've managed to find replacements for or get working eventually through compat. mode and a few hacks - others I've had to resort to running in a VM... then theres issues with punkbuster like above if your gaming - hopefully they'll get on the ball once windows 7 is out proper. Also while drivers are fairly common - theres a few bits like the webcam on my laptop that don't have proper 64bit drivers producing odd results... fortunatly its not something I really have a use for personally.

All in all its a bit of a mixed bag.

I'm sure Punkbuster will release a full client as soon as 7 is released to the general public anyway, so I wouldn't even count it as an issue.

The only reason I could think of would be if you still run 16 bit apps. But then most 16 bit apps will happily run inside a VM.

you would be mad to go with anything apart from 64bit? and why business that is an odd choice. have you got any software that needs the VM, remember this is not the same as xp compatibility mode. Unless you have specifies software, you know that refuses to run. don't bother and get HP.

I'm having problems with PB and Cod:WAW but this has nothing to do with 64bit and everything to do with punkbuster not releasing a windows7 client as windows7 uses some diffrent processes and so can throw up errors for PB.

If you'd done it earlier you could have got win7 home for £29.99 from various places, but its a bit dearer all over now.
