Hi People,,

PCIe 3.0 x16 Slots as I am going to by a New GPU and would love to know as 6gb's and usb 3 will be nice .

hi Bilbo
I have at the moment a i920 cpu with a gigabyte Motherboard working ok and would not mind a cheapish way to upgrade chipset and be able to use the PCI express for the new GPU.

Hi Bilbo yeah your right about the future proof, thought I would try and get another year or so out off it, If possible, nice idea if I could :-) based on what I required for New GPU and extras possibly, throwing in.

There are no S1366 boards with PCI-E Gen 3.0.

There never will be because it wouldn't work.

PCI-E Gen 3.0 is only supported by as yet unreleased processors such as Intel's Ivy Bridge.

thanks People for your thoughts on this topic, nice to know the facts when we can :-)

Better to get a Z68 board atm if you can, PCI-E 3.0 wont be needed for a long time, but it will be Ivy Bridge and PCI-E 3.0 ready for future proofing.

Hoping to get a lot more out of mine, lol :D (no desire or funds to upgrade anyway)

When PCI-E 3.0 cards come out will they be backward compatible?

Fair enough, I just wondered if you already had a 1366. It's not really a "future proof" socket :D

I dunno about that I've had my i7 920 running at 4Ghz for two year's now and it's still going strong ^___^ Although Ivy Bridge does sound tempting, Especially if it clocks as high or higher than sandy bridge. Not to mention sandy bridges cooling at 4.5Ghz is very impressive. =]

Sell the i7 920 & board, get yourself a 2500K & Z68 board, like the Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3, which has two PCI-E 3.0 slots.

Then when Ivybridge arrives sell the 2500K & upgrade to Ivybridge.

Socket 1155 has more upgrade potential than Socket 1366, plus it runs cooler, lower voltages = less heat.

I sold my i7 920 & board at the beginning of the year & went with a 2500K because of the advantages with 1155.

to be honest my original plan was to get a next generation gpu and plug that in to get a big jump from my 2*gtx280SLI's I have at the moment, To get a motherboard that would have taking my cpu and giving me the pci 3 bus plus extras would have being a bonus to me and others possibly, I am already keeping an eye out for the next generation cpus and motherboards although there are some ivy bridge boards available at the moment on shelf so to speak like you have said, though I am holding out just for the cpu and motherboard.
