Is there a 'sweet spot' for resolution and screen size?

Besides the lower res would the 19" have a crisper image than a 22"?

Why is the Samsung 20.1" more expensive than the 22"?

Is this one a good one to get:

Samsung SM2043BW

Well thanks for the advice so far. I think I'll go for a 20", possibly 22" if the decrease in picture quality is negligible. What are the best 20" screens for about £150-£200?

I have a thread open on that subject and these are the TFT's i am interested in:

1. SM2043BW

2. SM2253LW

3. SM2053BW

Not many replies though, so far.

The 19" wouldn't be any crisper no. Just lower resolution, don't bother with it, they're cheap but you want something to wow you.

Monitors that are 20", 24" and 30" can have PVA/IPS panels which have good viewing angles and colour reproduction, and cost a little bit more.

Monitors that are 19" and 22" just do have TN panels which are a lot cheaper, not so good viewing angles if you're watching a film and the colour can band easily. The dot pitch is higher too, meaning on a 20 and a 22" inch you're both at the resolution 1680x1050, so can you see that the 22" won't be as sharp because it's putting the same pixels on a bigger screen.

I'd either go for a PVA panel in the 20" category, or save up a few pennies and go for a super PVA panel in the 24" screen size, there is also the OcUK DGM monitor that has a good panel but not so good build quality that you'll see in the top right hand corner of the forums advertised that's a good buy.

Whatever you choose you'll definitely see an improvement, just if you get a 22" TN and ever have it side by side with a 20/24" screen, you'll see your inferiorities. :)

i'd get a 20", going from a 15" you'll be more than happy. there is no advantage of having a massive screen. at the end of the day its just what size you prefer to use and desk space. i use a 17" at the moment that iv'e had for a good few years, which is still fine as i sit pretty close and have a small desk.

You forgot to mention the positives of TN. The OP mentions gaming, not sure if this is the main use but isn’t TN still considered best for gaming due to the faster response times and lower input lag?

I’ve just gone from 17” to 22” and I think it looks amazing, maybe side by side with a 20” I’d notice a difference but I don’t have it side by side with one so it doesn’t really matter, for me it looks great.

So, would this mean that a 19" widescreen would have a nicer crisper picture than a 22" TFT. If not, would a 20.1" TFT be great to get for all round PC use? Not interested in 24 etc. Ta guys.

Are the Samsung 20" TFT's good ones to go for or do you think a 22" would best, i.e: Samsung Aqua SM2253LW

A 19" shares the same native resolution with a 17", and a 22" shares the same native resolution as a 20" display.

So for sharpness you'd pick the lower sized screen out of those two size brackets as it uses smaller pixel size.

As I play MMO's that have lots of icons and chat windows, I'm considering the advantage of a 22" for larger font. But don't really want a overly larger screen.

The competiton have caught up now (well, a while ago actually) and their panels are great for gaming. :)
