is there a tweak ui equivalent for vista?

every time i reinstall windows the first thing i do when finished is install tweak ui and use it to tell xp that my documents, my pictures, etc, are not on the same physical drive as windows, but on another drive.

when the vista issues start to get fixed i will be upgrading, but i am wondering how i can change folder locations in vista. tweak ui is not compatible and i will need something to do the same thing.

or can it be done easily with the os itself. by the way i know i could probably do this with registry tweaks, but i like to leave the registry alone as much as possible.

I have seen you can hack tweak ui to work under vista (compatibility mode or something if you right click -> properties and set it to xp)

Now whether the appropriate registry entries are in the same place is another question! So you might want to play (carefully) and see if it can still make the changes you want.
I did look very briefly and didn't find an alternative so I would be interested to know if there is one :).

You can do this easily in XP and Vista without using TweakUI. Just right click the 'My Documents' folder in XP and change the target in the 'Location' tab.

Same in Vista (although you have to do it for every folder, as Pictures, Video etc no longer follow 'Documents')

i didn't know that location option was there in xp and it is good to know i can do this in vista too. thanks for your help.

another question that your reply brings to mind.

I have had vista installed before (trial versions), and i could not sort out where the documents folder really lives. and when i tried to access the folders locations that looked like contenders (i think there were 2 places) i couldn't access either of them. even when i changed folder permissions access was denied, although when i clicked documents in start menu or desktop there was no problem. what is going on there?????

Not sure - that happens when you follow the 'junctions' that point the old XP locations to the new vista locations.

All should be in C:\users\username\ - separate folders for Documents, Pictures, Videos, Links, Favourites, Searches, Desktop, Saved Games, Contacts. Epic(!)

There are also similar folders under C:\users\public - for files accessible by all users.

when i installed vista it was a dual boot. stuck it on its own partition so it was a clean install really, so i'm not sure what caused me to not be able to access the folders.

but anyway, what i am thinking to myself is that i might put my extra hdd into my machine and install vista on that for another look - with my 2 xp hdd's disconnected. when i want to test vista i'll disconnect the xp hdd's. cos dual booting vista, going by my previous experiences, is very bad for xp.

Ah, never knew you could do that. Thanks a lot :)

Personally I think they should bundle TweakUI with operating systems now, just hide the settings well so that average Joe can't find them and fiddle around.

Tweak VI is scandalous borderline scam tbh, most of the "free" options don't work, some are just plain farce, like an tweak to "enable" Hotmail in Windows Mail that of course it doesn't do anything, not even as much as remembering ticked option. As far as I can see, all Tweak VI really does, except pretty basic, low aim, straight out of explorer menu tweaks is push people into believing paid version will do their tweak wishlist properly.

I haven't actualy used TweakVI but I do use TweakXP which is an awesome program. I thought TweakVI would be very good seen as it's made by the same company.

that's what i thought when i used it :(

contains a lot of 'power tweaks', and not many of the useful cosmetic changes that tweakui can handle

hopefully ms will make a tweakui6 or something for vista, really want them to re-enable classic search!
