Is there a way to benchmark the performance of Windows?

I'm just wondering if there is anyway to test the performance of Vista (how fast firefox loads, how quick folders open, how fast games install etc etc.) in order to make sure my system is running as it should?

I'm going to run 3dmark 2006 at some point but that wont cover the performance of Windows, right?

For file system benchmarks etc run sisoft sandra.

Is there a guide of any sort so i can compare my results to something? Having never run it before i've no way of knowing if my results will be normal for my spec or not.

It has reference results built in.
