we've just moved into a (clean) flat, but flies like to just wonder in whenever i open the lounge window. Is there anything that puts flies off? I dont really want to put a mesh up :(

Venus fly trap.

What type of lfies are we talking about?
Big bluebottles, or small fruit flies?

Either way, a venus fly trap :D

Use mint as a fly repellent. Small sachets of crushed mint can be placed around the home to discourage flies.

Bay leaves, cloves and eucalyptus wrapped in small cheesecloth squares can be hung by open windows or doors.

Place a small, open container of sweet basil and clover near pet food or any open food in the house.

A few drops of eucalyptus oil on a scrap of absorbant cloth will deter flies. Leave in areas where flies are a problem.

You can make your own flypaper with this simple recipe: Mix 1/4 cup syrup, 1 tbsp. granulated sugar and 1 tbsp. brown sugar in a small bowl. Cut strips of brown kraft paper and soak in this mixture. Let dry overnight. To hang, poke a small hole at the top of each strip and hang with string or thread.

A site visitor suggests a light spray of Pine Sol on affected areas will deter flies.

Safe, nontoxic, pheromone-based outdoor and indoor fly traps are available.

Fly paper should work quite well :)

Or get one of those electric fly swatter tennis racket things and go hunting :D

ALso try and gather up any spiders you find and give them a home :p

Ive found Citronella oil to be the best at keeping flies away. Get a bottle of it from one of those hippy-all-natural shops (like Holland and Barrats). Its comes in a little (20ml) bottle, but a single dab on a tissue is enough.

smear poo all over your neighbours windows, yours should be pretty clear from that point on.

Seems to be a lot of flies around this summer, bit weird tbh as i've never noticed it to this extent in previous years.

Fly paper or if you're wanting some fireworks a bug zapper, the latter will cost a few quid but damn they're cool.
