Is there a way to keep C&Q enabled during phenom 965 overclocking?

On quite a mild overclock right now;
Phenom 2 965 (125 watt)
clock 3.7
nb 2200
ht 2000
Crosshair III mobo, corsair 750 watt, Asus 5850 (tinkering with overclocking here- it will run 5870 settings without any added voltage!), ram isnt ideal, 2000htz ripjaw running at 1333 8-8-8-24

When I go even 1 htz over 3.7 c&q stops functioning, now given I am still at stock processor voltage, after 24 hrs+ of gaming with good thermals (never over 48C) it is rock solid for what I need it to do and I am pretty sure I can push this a bit further, but,

a. is there a way to go over 3.7 and keep c&q?

b. is there a way to do this whilst adjusting the voltage settings?

Also how safe is it to take the nb to 2400- a 20% increase seems a lot, and I want this chip to last a few years?

It's actually not that tough, it just looks scary at the start :)

Settings are simple: frequency multiplier, cpu core voltage, and cpu-nb voltage, same stuff any overclocker has dealt with before.

Difference is that here you're getting all the running states of your PII exposed; and you've got 4 of them to worry about.

CnQ picks from these "p-states" according to loading, on the basis that if something is consistently asking for ~30% of one core's time, it's probably not something that will be improved by turning up to full speed (e.g. it's a media player), so may as well stick with, say, 2.1GHz and save some power.

CnQ tends to have issues when overclocking via FSB, because it's working on multipliers, e.g. the lowest speed is 4x FSB. Turn that up to, say, 250, and suddenly the base speed has taken a jump from 800MHz to 1GHz, and the default voltage may no longer be enough.

If you know your default speeds and voltages for all the p-states, you can use K10Stat to bring them back to sensible levels, no matter what you've got your FSB and max multiplier are set to :)

Lol, I must confess though, I haven't actually tested it past 3.7GHz as the OP has done; it is possible that the chip is hardwired not to use CnQ past a certain point, that K10Stat could help out is just an educated guess ^^;
 
but on some motherboards u can't use CnQ if you overclock..

on my motherboard if i overclock via multplier or even FSB, it won't allow CnQ to work.
 
I honestly had no idea that that was an intentional feature of the motherboard :(

Don't suppose there's a definitive list somewhere of what will/will not allow CnQ at high frequencies?
 
C&Q doesnt seem to like fsb adjustments, which is fine, as I do not want to tinker with the ht link, sources say that has a neutral or negative effect.

I did try upping fsb by 1 to see how C&Q reacted...it throttled a few times at start up but from there just stopped working.

As for k10, that has either caused or highlighted some very bizarre behavior in my chip- I set it to [email protected] in k190 and put it under load, the chip's voltage went to 1.47 in everest & cpuz- chip max voltage is 1.5!

This was concerning, so I went into bios and set it at 1.375 manually...now when I load it the chips voltage goes to 1.36...

I am not sure what is causing this behavior will probably reinstall C&Q but I m not keen on messing with k10 again.
 
Reinstalled C&Q, and still if I leave voltage to auto, it hops up to 1.45 on load.

When I set it to 1.375 it sits at about 1.35 under load...weird- my board should be a capable of keeping it at the right volts- what do you think is happening?
 
Strange, I have no idea why you're seeing that voltage behaviour with K10Stat el Kuarlos, makes no sense to me :( Been running fine for me the last couple of weeks. Is it possible your motherboard is detecting the overclock and using an inbuilt profile to guess the voltage required? (Don't worry too much about 1.45, that's about typical for the heavy overclockers, as long as temps are fine I doubt it's a problem).

A small reduction in voltage under load is normal, it's not an intentional thing, it's just that we're measuring down to the milivolt and the components in common use just can't regulate it to that degree.

Gareth170; thanks for the link. I'm running an Asus board myself, and have just been assuming that everything was supposed to have CnQ enabled at all times :S Oh well, live and learn ^^;
 
Thanks for the insight fella, I have been keeping it at manual 1.375 and now it seems to always stay below that, an hour or so of gaming shows it ll still do what I want it to.

Going to leave k10 alone for now, full rebuild coming up once I get paid so may tinker then.
