Is there an updated guide for rooting/installing a custom ROM on the original HTC Desire?

As title please. My Desire was handed down to my girlfriend but she's already getting the low-memory issue so I'd like to install a custom ROM and partition the SD card.

I've found this guide: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sh...85&highlight=installing+custom+rom+htc+desire

..but like most guides I can find it's quite old. Any updates on that sort of method?

Was thinking of giving her one of the Jellybean 4.2.2 ROMS from XDA, such as this, good idea?

Thanks!

EDIT: Also, I unlocked the Desire using Giffgaff's method. Is this going to affect it in any way?

I would stick with stock, some roms have issues and when your girlfriend starts having them your only going to get grief.

Just do a factory reset after a normal update

Might be best to stick with a 2.2/2.3 ROM, unless the 4.0+ ones are stable for every day use.

As for unlocking the network, no, that does not affect rooting/bootloader unlocking at all.

The Gingerbread (2.3) Miui was pretty good when I had it until Jan last year, practically made it a new phone. Has a nice uniform feel to it too.

Xda dev forums are your one stop shop for all things custom.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php

Search on it for your phone and look in the '[device] android development' subforum. There is usually a comprehensive rooting guide sticky.

Most devices are subtly different, but the General procedure for custom roms is
  • Root
  • Flash custom recovery
  • Use recovery to flash custom ROM from sdcard

Rooting just gives you super user rights to change stuff.
Recovery is like brick protection, even if you install a garbage rom you can go still get in to recovery to save the device. In your case, hold the down volume button while turning the device on.

The OP linked to a rom with 200k+ views and 400 posts. Thats ALLOT of beta testers. Using stock firmware on old phones with large development communities is shameful.

The author you link to on XDA has done some excellent work in making JB run smoothly on this quite old device!

I'm quite happily running v5.3 of his Cyanogen mod based rom. here

He also has a JellyBean AOKP rom (which you link to)
And a MIUI based rom here

I'd recommend the XDA tutorials page for latest advice on rooting, quite some time ago, I used the unrevoked tool recommended in those threads.

  • Before starting ensure you have important info backed up (Titanium backup recommended)
  • Recommend you have a copy of the stock RUU rom as backup on the SD card - for any emergencies
  • Remember to wipe data, cache and dalvik cache before flashing the new JB rom

For the Desire you're probably best sticking with a GB rom. I personally found that the MildWild roms were excellent.

I'd disagree, the Jellybean 4.1.2 ROM I linked to is "smooth as" on my beaten up Desire and everything works!

Fantastic ROM
