ok, time for another fresh install of windows, got 2 drives to use and wondering if either would be better.

1TB 32MB Cache Western Digital WD1001FALS

or

1TB 32MB Cache Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ

would imagine they are going to be very similar spec wise, running the Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ at the moment, but have the WD spare so thought best to ask.

Can't you benchmark both drives? That will tell you exactly which one performs best for your needs. I suspect the WD is going to win overall but it'll be a close thing. The Spinpoint Fx's are very quiet though, especially compared to the (relatively) noisy Caviars. I've used the F1, F3, and now running one of the new 64MB Caviar Blacks. Been very happy with all of them to be honest. I use them for backup / storage though. If I had to choose one as an OS drive I'd pick the Caviar with its faster access time and use the Sammy as the secondary drive. Their good write speeds makes them ideal for this purpose.

Yeah I doubt there is very little performance difference between them, although you may see a difference with benchmarks, I doubt you'll notice anything different for everyday use.

Also don't think you would notice the difference between the two.

But I agree with Ziggy that I would use the Samsung simply because it is quiet.

For an OS drive I would bench them and use the one with the best random small file performance. There won't be much difference so it wouldn't matter that much but that's what I'd do anyway. HD Tune and ATTO are the best to use for that.
