Good afternoon all Linux-ers! :D

You all might remember my threads of linux frustration that I have posted in the past. I'd got sick of windows and said 'up yours' to microsoft.

This time, however, I'm trying to make a choice for my own personal benefit. I'm not angry with microsoft. My Vista lappy and XP desktop are doing me just fine. However, I secretly yern for the gentoo geek factor.

Is there any reason why I should or should not download the latest snapshot and dual boot? Bearing in mind I use my laptop for coding, image creation/manipulation, internet, email and MSN and my pc for scanning/printing, gaming and updating ye olde ipod?

Cheers,

It's a question I've wanted an answer to.

I downloaded Kubuntu once again and might install it - but I can't really see anything that keeps me on the Linux platform - apart from using Wine which plays things that Windows obviously can naturally...

Is it a toys/gadget thing? I can't see the 'pulling factor' personally.

if you need to ask, then probably not.
if you dont want to pay the windows/office prices or fancy a change (and a hell of a challenge) then give it a go...

for the challenge thats why I went towards linux, learn new things all the time, with windows it got boring.

dual boot, its great .

linux = everyday computing
XP = gamming

saying that i happen to be gamming more and more in my linux distro at the moment I've gotten into nexuiz at the moment :D

Gentoo would most likely put you off and does nothing for its user-friendly image... I suggest you try Ubuntu first.

Maybe I should have been a little bit more specific :rolleyes: I've used linux before. Fedora 4, Gentoo, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Server and Debian 4. So I've got a pretty good idea of how linux works ;)
My question was not 'whats the best linux distro for me' but 'is it worth me leaving an O/S that works for an O/S that may present some challenges but will be fun'

Sure, give it a whirl. I ditched XP shortly after it came out due to the constant, "OMG you have changed a component no you cannot log on without reregistering!" ********.

After a very short while I found that just about everything I wanted to do with my PC was actually far easier to accomplish in linux. And the gentoo forums are very good indeed. In fact community support in general is excellent, if you avoid those snooty Debian types :p

Think about how far linux has come in the last 5 years - Microsoft have achieved almost nothing but farce between XP and Vista. The only two things I've found remotely painful have been wifi/WPA support, but even this has come on leaps and bounds recently.

Fiesty+Beryl is fantastic too. :D

And all my favourite FPS games have native linux ports. Everyting else (EVE basically) works fine under WINE, but a native EVE client is due out any day now as well.

If you try it for a while and don't get on with it, just switch back to the tool that suits you better. There's nothing to lose.

I'd say go for it... at least moving from Windows to Linux isn't gonna cost you anything - except your time. If you were doing it the other way round and after making the switch realised you didn't like using Windows, you'd have wasted money and time.

What have you got to lose, really?

Ubuntu Ultimate?

Just wondering if anyone was using Ubuntu Ultimate?

Found it by chance while trying to find out if Fluxbox worked with Beryl (sadly, it doesn't :().

That there is a link to the 'Gamers Edition' and has a load of pre-configured components (like beryl and ipod support :D). Seems as though the creator has tried to include as many packages as possible to make the transition from windows even easier. Of course, all this adds up to an ISO of 3.8GB :eek:

Personally, I think I'll stick with Gentoo and just include the packages that I need :)
