Is there any point in upgrading anymore?

I agree OP - this is something I have only just started to realize.

The hardware is just NOT being taken advantage of in PC games. Its screaming ahead of all the software.

I have yet to see all the processor cores working away during a game. A real bummer since so many of us have powerful hardware with graphics cards that look like they came from the warp core of Voyager.

Haha was thinking of upgrading my 1055t & gtx470 to ivy i7 & gtx680 but reading the comments and thinking about it, upgrading this for a only one game is probably too much seen as current spec will handle it on medium just fine (Game is metro last light).

I've been thinking of 'upgrading' to your system! From 2.16ghz dual core. Haha. You're system sounds like it should be okay for a while.

I've barely touched my rig since I bought it new when S1156 first came out.

I just don't feel the need to be changing hardware currently and non of the games being released are making my cross-fired 5850's cry so I'll be staying where I am for the foreseeable future.

I only play at 1680x1050 though which probably helps a little.

surely nvidia and ATI are going to have to persuade the game developers to start making more demanding games or there sales are going to plum it once everyone realises that there's no point in upgrading?

Only way i see you need an upgrade is if you want to go eyeinfinity route with 3 high res monitors. But yes i can agree, no point upgrading now.

No there isn't any point in upgrading a desktop PC at this point. Save your money to get something truly beastly when the next gen of consoles comes in and we might finally see some taxing games again for a while...

I upgraded my 5970 to the new 670 SLI, and i love it. I can play bf3 in ultra, and also shogun 2 total war looks amazing. I wont need to upgrade for atleast 2 years now. But i do like to have all my settings at max else i get that expensive itch.

I dont think i see the point anymore :(
got a Phenom x6, 16gb ram, 2gb 6970.

and all i seem to be playing is ****** console games.

is there ever going to be a game that uses the hardware i have?

oh! in ten yrs...ok lmao

Erm....you heard of a wee game called BF3? You telling me your 6970 can max it out with all the eye-candy?

Ditto for Crysis 1 and 2.

Ditto for upcoming Crysis 3 and the Stalker games.

OP what you are describing is a card with good future-proofing. Unlike our console cousins, we are living in a 1080p PLUS era, with 2560x1440/1600 and multi-monitor setups much more commonplace. So essentially the answer is yes, there is a point in upgrading more and more....

it wouldn't matter if they did.

Average turn around for a game is what, 2-4 years for main titles. Currently the technology has a much higher turn around time than software hence the reason you've seen it catch up.

You've also got to take in to account that programmers are getting better and writing code that is cleaner and more functional. Take Crysis for instance, everyone was told you'd need an 8800gtx so all the tech heads went out and purchased one. Then, when the game was released they noticed that it still couldn't be played at max settings, more so to do with bad programming than "being ahead of its time!".

But then, when we had limitations on hardware programmers had to develop clever ways of achieving their targets, such as when they developed Halflife and had issues with gfx ram limits and texture sizes they had to develop a way of doing it. Because hardware was limiting we had to code better.

It's a never ending circle, each relies on the other and as we start to reach the limits of current technology the software will once again become more demanding, but it's going to take a while now :)

i have a i7 920 @ 4.2 / 6gb ram / 6970 and everything apart from bf3/ metro run fine.

what i keep bumping in to is badly coded games.. batman arkham city should run great on my pc but its full of slowdown and stutter.

Erm....Yes

well at 1920x1080 it can

I would request benchmarks to prove it in that case as I find that very hard to believe. Look at the benches here:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063-12.html

..and that is for single-player. You may be able to set Ultra at your Res, but certainly not with MSAA and SSAO set to max.

Not to mention my comments about higher res and multi-monitor setups i.e at 2560, the 6970 is utterly owned.

ok hold on and i'll run off and do benchies and all that to prove it to you

do you care that much?

it can only play it a minimum settings at 640x480 then...happy?
