Is there any point in upgrading anymore?

I would request benchmarks to prove it in that case as I find that very hard to believe. Look at the benches here:

..and that is for single-player. You may be able to set Ultra at your Res, but certainly not with MSAA and SSAO set to max.

Not to mention my comments about higher res and multi-monitor setups i.e at 2560, the 6970 is utterly owned.

wtf? bf3 maxed runs perfectly fine on a 6970..

i dont go by numbers, i go by playing the game and guess what.. no problems at all.

Erm....you heard of a wee game called BF3? You telling me your 6970 can max it out with all the eye-candy?

Ditto for Crysis 1 and 2.

I don't know what AMD has done to the drivers for my 5870's since late 11.xx or when the 12.xx started, but I use to get steady 45 - 60fps with everything maxed out on Crysis. Now I can barely get 30fps at times with no action on screen. Even taking the settings down makes no difference.

11.5 or whatever set that had the magnetized mouse cursor at the top edge of the screen played very well with Crysis. Saying that, BF3 performance is fantastic with 12.4.

I'd love to finish Crysis but... BF3 is my main game. I really detest when newer drivers kills older games. The performance was really good on Crysis2 with 12.1 the last I played it with the DX11 features and texture packs. I've never finished either game as I became somewhat bored of them.
I still detest this on PC games. One driver works fine for one game but doesn't the next. Regardless how rubbish console graphics can be at times, at least you can just pop in the disc and play.

batman arkham city should run great on my pc but its full of slowdown and stutter.

That's a DX11 problem. Run it in DX9 and it's fine.

Running the benchmark in DX11 for Arkham City, I had a max of about 140, average of about 100, and a minimum of 5...

I did the same again, but in DX9, and I had a max of 180, average of 120, and minimum of about 80 - 90.

I can max out bf3 with my 6970 on 1080p also crysis 1 & 2 are fine also.

tbh you sound like you dont really know what your talking about

its ok, Just bow down to him, he's getting his e-peen on

What a poor assortment of answers here - "tbh you sound like you dont really know what your (sic) talking about".... it beggars belief, it really does.

So basically you are refuting what I am saying without any basis and then accusing me of getting my "e-peen" on?

Not sure what the point of this thread is then tbh. Suit yerselves

I can see where op is coming from. Got my new rig 2 weeks ago (i7 2700k @4.3ghz, 16gb ram, gtx 680) and it's kinda like "ummm... can't really show it off except BF3 maxed out" and I can't see Diablo III taxing it very much!

Have you played metro 2033 on max? Also sequel is coming out this year. Put it on max and gaze at beauty

My q6600 and GTX460 is still easily good enough for 1080p, 2 or 4xAA and 8 or 16XAF and medium details, which is more than enough for me. I don't see a point in upgrading for a good while now. The only thing I fancy is 3 screens for iRacing which would obviously need more power, but I'm not in a rush.

I'd like to upgrade my gtx 460 but only for a small number of games. Whenever I look at reviews, it still seems I'd have to pay almost double what I paid for the 460 2 years ago to get anything worth upgrading so I don't bother. For a good few years it seemed to me you could buy a new gpu for ~£150 then 2 years later spend the same and get one much faster. That seems to have stopped, and if I'm honest, I can't quite see what people are getting excited about upgrading their gtx 580s for 7970s

With the games I'm playing at the moment, Legend of Grimrock and Toy Soldiers, I really couldn't see a point in chaning from a E8400 @ 4Ghz and a GTX 460. It does everything that I need and does it well.
skyrim ran with no issues.
I will be looking forward to the new Civ V expansion but even that should run fine.

I sort of played with the idea of change when the IB platform was released but I know that the Haswell ones should be out in less than a year, but maybe I'll skip that as well. It is pretty hard looking to change from my system as it simply works and never BSOD's etc.

I have just bought myself a new compact camera for around £290 and I would prefer to spend my money on stuff like that then what would seem to be a pointless "upgrade".

In a way it is a good thing, for me, as it does mean that I can buy other things much worthy of my spending money than just the almost annual "upgrades" which would be felt necessary to play the latest title that often would not be completed.

My main PC is a Q6600 @ 3.6 and 2X 5770s in CF, WD Raptors etc so getting on a little but can handle everything I throw at it.
It's nice to upgrade but downstairs I have an Athlon X2 4200 4GB Ram and 8800 GTS hooked up to a TV at 1280*720 and it runs games like Skyrim just fine, can't justify upgrading it and the hardware is ancient. Max out your boards RAM and upgrade the graphics card periodically and you are golden for several years.

I'd love a new rig, my current one (see sig) is only missing Sata 3. In fact it has Sata 3 but the controller is rubbish.

Am I going to buy a new rig just to get a bit more performance out of my Vertex 4? May be, but it will be in 12 months time when the new line Intel CPUs are out.
