Is there any reason not to buy XMS3?

Hi guys,

Not settled on the bits for my Sandybridge system yet but I've noticed the bonkers price on XMS3 at OcUK at the moment.

Is there any reason not to go ahead and order 4Gb of the PC12800 stuff for my new build? Is it the best choice? I'll obviously be overclocking my i5-2500k - is this a good choice for it?

Thanks!

Pfft. You are kidding?

It's reviewed as some of the best stuff out there. I don't know of any PC e-tailers who don't use XMS3 on their overclocked bundles :p

Geil is *supposed* to be a bit better, but I'm not so sure - they left public sector for a long time, and I haven't found any reviews.

If you are looking to buy any DDR3 system soom and you can afford to buy RAM now - then that XMS3 stuff is the best deal I've seen for a few years. Its great RAM, the price is low and you get free delivery - win, win, win.

You'd be stupid not to order at that price. My 4gb 1333mhz Geil value cost me £85 back in april, memory has pretty much halved in price in 9 months

It certainly is a great deal. I would buy a set as I have two DDR3 machines, one (my HTPC) uses the exact same RAM, but I really don't think I need another 4GB. Even for gaming (the most intensive use of my machine) I don't think you need more than 4GB.

didnt want to make a new thread for a question i have but will just tag on here!

will there be much difference in the ability to overclock and performance wise between the 10666 and 12800 rated XMS3 sets. the 12800 are like £36 for 4gb which is great, but somebody is selling 8gb(2x4) of the XMS 10666 (1333mhz) ram and was wondering if its going to be noticable, with a sandybridge 2500k.

No differnce overclocking on Sandy Bridge, its pure multiplyer overclocking so even the cheapest 1066mhz sticks will llow you to overclock.

I thought sb only took 1.5 on the vdimm, xms3 is 1.65v at 1600, from memory ( I run it) it uses 1.5 at 1333 so you may have to stick it on that.

I have just ordered 2 x 2 Gb, I already have 2 x 2 Gb installed.
I am running mine at 1600 MHz with 1333 MHz timings at 1.58v

A lot of OCUKs own bundles are using the XMS3 stuff at stock speeds so you have to assume stock volts too.

From what I've read you would be better going for 1.5v Ram for a SB clock. There is doubt on whether the higher voltage ram is causing SB's to Die.

SB is recommended to run 1.5V, but you can undervolt those dimms and still run them at stock according to Gibbo, so may as well stick with them.

I've been testing the XMS3 today with sandybridge and Corsair need a good pat on the back.

Its prime stable and memtest stable at 1600MHz at 9-9-9-24-2N timings at just 1.40v, yes just 1.40v.

Now when you consider they rate this RAM at 1.65v, thats fantastic, but I've suspected Corsair have been using the vengeance IC's for a while for their generic XMS3 parts and this kinda proves it. For the money the XMS3 is unbeatable and an ideal companion to Sandybridge. :)

The Corsair XMS3 will run as low at 1.35v at rated timings if you get a nice kit, its fine for Sandybridge, they alll seem happy at 1.50v, some sets even lower. :)

That's great news for the new Sandy Buyers/clockers, I personally run Corsair XMS with my Q6600 & have never had a single issue.
Kudos to Corsair.

*Note*
Am very interested in this as I am about to blow my savings.:D
