I have been using this media player for a while now and really want to control the player using a remote control. Unfortunately every remote out there that I can afford is infrared only. I am really after a wireless radio or bluetooth version but I have seen they cost £60 upwards. Real good quality £100+ So I had an idea to use a nintendo wii remote. As this already uses bluetooth then I just need one of those bluetooth USB thumb sticks. I have seen wiimotes selling for around £20 so they make the best remote controls. Then you have the added bonsu of what the mod community has done where you can use it to also control your PC games and all kinds of applications. I heard people use eventghost with some simple programming of the xml file within xbmc to register the remotes key commands. Has anyone tried this within xbmc, is it possible?

Before you said wiimote, i was gonna reply with wiimote.

You can basically use it as a mouse replacement, but you need a 2 point light source above/below your tv to make it work properly. (AKA a wii sensor bar) I did it about a year or 2 ago when it was first talked about. If you can operate xbmc with a mouse then it should work.

Howver, you could just get a bluetooth mouse? or a trackball? or a bluetooth KB with a trackpad built it?

ps, hows the book coming along?

Many thanks for your reply

My friend is still reading it! Or so he says. I really want this book read so i can get some insight on it, then I can work on improving it. Editing it completely and getting it sold. While I patiently wait for my friend to finish reading it. I have started writing a film script which has been another dream that I started years ago but never finished. It's a sci-fi action adventure. About a fraternity that's been around for thousands of years protecting a secret that's so powerful that If it was learned of by us mere mortals the world could collapse and a deadly virus could expel and wreak havoc on a deadly scale.

The wiimote uses an infra red sensor in the front of it to sense the relative position of the light emitted from the 'sensor bar' .. This info is translation to coordinates and communicated back to the wii via bluetooth. (2.4GHz), along with other date like button presses, and motion info.

Check this guys youtube videos for more info - he ingeniously uses the wiimote back to front for some cool hacks ::

I heard it uses both bluetooth and infrared. I read this on many sites the ones where they were talking about homebrew on the wii.

I thought that the motion detection was by infra-red, due to the bar that sits on the telly; but pressing the buttons was done by blue tooth etc.

I agree with dvdbunny  :p

There are nice addons for Pocket pc's, the PSP and Iphone which allow you to control xbmc via wifi. IIRC it's done via the webserver component of it.

I use my phone, a hermes, to controll xbmc media, - it's a little more fiddly than a regualr remote, but when in other rooms away from the source you get a nice visual display album covers etc on the remote.

Be sure to post the script here for review.
