.. I only ask as I think I've reverted....

I used to be uber geeky as a child - and since my uni days are behind me and I'm on a steady career track, I think i've regressed!

An example - I've just bought 3 revell model kits and fully intend to spend my weekend putting them together...whats worse is that they're models of battlestar galactica ships...

My sorta gf says i am turning into a proper nerd - so my question to you is -

is it ok to be a nerd in this day and age?

I must stress that I am normal, I have a normal job and drive a normal car etc etc... but I'm quite looking foward to the most ubernerdy weekend ever putting them together.... sad!? I may even watch star trek as I do it!!

Any thoughts!

Yes.

Geeks > nerds. Geeks are interested in gadgets and games, nerds have intimacy and social issues.

[edit]Hang on, are you asking whether it is OK to be a nerd, or whether there is anything wrong with it? The answer to the former is no, the answer to the latter is yes :)

Can i be a nerk then perhaps?? As far as social issues - i think an schoolmate mr DRZ can confirm that I am 'normal' - but I wouldnt put it past him to fib! Just ask 'im bout the barbershop quartet!

EDIT - re-read - you have a nice way with words... had to read it a few times before I got the gist! :P

If your "sorta girlfriend" leaves you, then the alarm bell would start to ring. Otherwise, be nerdy at certain times only so most people don't think you are and you'll stop worrying.

Battlestar Spastica though? Come on man, Star War Milleniunm Falcon!

Aye - 'tis true but we've been 'friends' for a while now - jus nowt 'official'! Dont tempt me with the star wars goodnes.. they might be next!

A geek is someone who has interests in what some people might find 'sad', but they still have a social life and act generally normal.

A nerd is someone who prides himself in his 'sad' interests and will happily exclude himself from society in the process of pursuing his hobbies.

It is not good to be nerd.

In that case, I'm a geek then.. settled!

Well that turned into the longest day of my life... bloomin trains on time as usual..

Nice to see some good replies - but i've definitely decided that I fit into the geek category.. which suits me..

Cheers for the replies folks!

sounds like self esteem's a problem, rather than actually being a nerd. If you need validation on the matter then that's the issue, not being a nerd itself.

Self esteem is certainly not a problem - I hold myself in very high regard thankyou very much!

The topic was not meant to be serious rather a discussion about the subject!

I wouldnt have got where I am today if it wasnt for self belief etc etc!

I have a good job, earn good money, good friends and have just received my second years mortgage statement - all in all I'm very happy!

The thread was not in the 'self validation' vein either - I was merely commenting on the fact that I've led a relatively normal life - but I was a geeky extrovert in childhood and I just thought it was quite nice regressing a little bit! :)

Peace

There is nothing wrong with being a geek or nerd.

As long as you are happy.

Just because you're a nerd doesn't mean that you have know social life. Define yourself...

Not entirely sure if that was directed at me - but I'm game for a challenge!

22, nearly 23 red blooded male, university graduate - currently working as a civil engineer for a large company.. I'm into music in a big way - started out at school - choir, guitar group and then we started our own barbershop quartet - was wicked - 'specially when we did a gig in the girls school (at 16, and at our school that was a big thing!)

I was always into computers and tinkering - and I think when I was about 12 or something I watched star trek and thought 'this is quite kewl!' and thats when my love affair with all things sci fi began! Kind of petered of when I was doing a-levels, got involved with a girl and ended up doing school musicals! We split up when she went to uni, and I stayed at home which was sad but you get on..(LOL)

Then at uni, didnt really have the time - working full time(ish) whilst at uni was tricky so I didnt have much time!

Now, I'm fully qualified and have much more spare time on my hands - I'm sorta seein this girl and we get on great..

However, I think deep down will always be the little geeky child who beat rick dangerous in 2 hours!

Dont get me wrong, I'm not introvert in any way - there is no part of me that is, always the performer (some would say thats maybe because I'm insecure - but i'm not!)

Anyway ^'s me in a nutshell..:)
