Looking for a new HDD ~ 500g.

I rarely see Hitachi drives mentioned , although they seem much better value than other makes.

Seems to be Sammy , WD and Seagate , so is there a reason ?

My knowledge of HDDs is limited , are they Bad drives , Good drives ?

Cheers.

In the past they were known as Deathstars (Instead of Deskstars) Due to the mamouth failures... I have not used them in years but there do not seem to be as many probs as in the past...

I don't see any complaints about them these days.

Hitachi took over IBM's hard drive division many years ago. A lot of people still remember the old "deathstars" from IBM.. the 75GXP and to a lesser extent the 60GXP. This is why people are reluctant to recommend them.

Ah , i wondered where the " Deathstar " phrase came from , thanks

The deathstar tag is so old now and really isn't applicable to the hitachi drives that are for sale now. I have a 250 hitachi and while not the fatest in the world it has been a completely rock solid drive. For me hitachi drives are the middle of the road they rarely offer great speed but do what they are supposed to do reliably.

Have an old-ish 1TB drive, not as fast as current 'B' vairient drives, but reliable so far. Pretty quiet too, but it does run hotter than my other drives (it sits at 38deg while all the others are at 30 - nothing to do with position in case or airflow either). They are good drives, underrated and cheap so I guess that makes them a bargain. I'd get one in preference to an F1 myself, but it's buyer's choice.
