Is there anyway to avoid screen tearing without V-sync?

However, the experience most people will get is not a sustained 1+ seconds of less than 60fps, so if it's only less than 60fps for about 1/100th of a second, you won't be stuck with '30 fps' for a second, you'll get 59. Hence why to many people the 'capped at 30 fps' is a myth/nonsense.

Nonsense? Surely it's not if their card can render 70 frames in some scenarios but only 50 in busy scenarios. They have to choose between vsync which will limit them to 30fps during those busy scenes or no vsync with tearing in non-busy scenes
 
Try Second Life with Vsync enabled on an AMD 6xxx or 7xxx card. It locks to 30fps whether u have Triple Buffering on or off. I have had to turn off Vsync and TB in CCC and use Afterburners frame limit since Catalyst 12.1 (the last set that ran fine) but i think because Second Life uses such an old OpenGL version it might be them at fault and not the driver.

Its no myth and certainly isnt nonsense.

Everything else runs great for me with Vsync enabled and i prefer to use the advantage of Vsync keeping my card cooler aswell. It'll run at higher temps if i disable Vsync.

But this is part of the problem. You can still get tearing in 'non-busy' scenes. I'm playing SFIV right now and I'm getting tearing even on the title menu!

And that's with the in-game benchmark tool telling me I can average at 200FPS (even though I'm locked to 60FPS at the moment).
 
sorry didn't explain.
It has something called virtual v-sync, sorted out tearing in BF3 for me. messed up the lighting in sleeping dogs but its easily turned off :D

This is wrong LOL even if you have 120FPS on an 120hz you still get screen tear why? you my ask because the Monitor and GPU are not in sync with each other, Thats why even when you limit the FPS to 60 on a 60hz screen you still get screen tear.
Vsync stops the screen tear because Both the Display and GPU are linked (synced) with each other.

Fortunate for me then I have 7970 with Samsung 950D and never once have I seen screen tearing in over a year! Even when running bf3 at ultra settings at around average of 80 fps!

That said, then why am I still getting tearing if I've fixed my frame rate at 60FPS and my monitor is 60Hz?

Like I said before you will get screen tear no matter what if you dont use vsync. Your Monitor and GPU need to be in sync with each other to remove screen tear completely.

Yeah but if my GPU is rendering 60fps and my monitor is displaying 60 images per second then I thought there's no reason for there to be screen tear?
 
It's apparently possible but significantly less likely to be noticed. Or atleast that's what I'm getting.

I've never liked vsync but have also never noticed any tearing under my refresh..

But think about that for a moment,just because you have 60 fps doesn't mean that all or any for that matter of those 60 frames lines up perfectly with the 60 hz vsynce of your monitor.Its possible that 59 of those frames completely miss the vsync of the monitor by a fractioN of a second but the last frame takes slightly long enough to give you a 60 fps average.

Perhaps a better analogy would be to say that we both run 100 metres in ten seconds,would you expect everyone of our strides to be exactly the same distance and take the same amount of time? No,there would be fractional variations where some would be way out and the occasional one would be close to the same for our purposes(by which I mean within 0.016 or less of each other)
 
Never had problems turning V-Sync on, i keep it on all the time.

I hate people who go by hearsay rather than trying/testing things out themselves.
 
Hmm... that looks very interesting indeed. Seems to give decent performance boost.

yup bit of a performance boost too :D
I was happy with framerates but tearing was driving me nuts.

deff worth a go if you have compatible hardware. you just need to turn on the onboard GPU and install the intel drivers before you install virtu MVP. Leave monitor plugged into your PCIe GPU.
