Ive just downloaded top gear polar mission in full 1080p

everytime i try to play it the sound is fine but the screen keeps freezing and then going again.

im running an fx60 at 2.8ghz with crossfired x1900s 2gb of ram so not sure if my system is up to it, i would have thought so but i downloaded blue planet in 1080p a while back and it did the same thing so i deleted it.

do u think its my system or something else

im using vlc player as its a .mkv file

also i checked task manager and mem usage is only 60mb but when the screen does run for a few seconds the cpu goes to 50%

do i need to make it use both cores(how?)

or do i need a different player

Could really do with your help

thanks

Could be a mixture of things.

From memory, VLC will play .mkv files but it isn't terribly efficent about it, therefore very CPU hungry.

Which brings me to my next point, your CPU. I can't play HD on my desktop, (a 3800+ overclocked to 2.7ghz), and from memory the FX60 isn't a huge amount faster.

If you want to check, go to Apple's trailers website and download one of the 1080p trailers and see if you can play it full screen in quicktime with out it stopping. If ya can its prob VLC, if ya can't its ya system

well im converting it to an avi file and gonna try it with quicktime, see if that helps, i have watched 720p movies before and had no worries with sin city in 1080p(well i assumed from what it said it was)

After its converted ill let you know

someone mentioned about decoding it as its Top.Gear.Polar.Special.2007.BBC-HD.1080p.H.264.AC3.2.0

do i need a special decoder, seems weird that i have sound and video yet i might have to decode it?

The latest version of VLC helps fix performance issues. I certainly noticed it on my current system as I found that VLC froze quite a lot when playing 1080p but I still get the occasional jerk with lots of CGI going on.

running the latest vlc at the moment, your system is more powerful than mine so im boned by the look of it, shame really as i was looking forward to watching it, i could buy more memory i suppose but uve already got 4gb and im running xp lol

i manage to solve it, downloaded that 'media player classic' and played it on that, compared quality on side by side images with vlc and its identical.

cpu usage didnt go above 30% and played cleanly all the way through, so my advice for anyone having that issue or if they believe their system is to old to play 1080p files, download that program and try it out!
