A few yearrs ago i signed up to a great deal with dreamhost on their 777 promotion, paid just $10 for a year's worth of hosting with (at the time) generous webspace and bandwidth. More than i culd use.

I know it doesnt have 99.99 blah blah uptime etc but i personally never noticed it go down, and the speed was always fine for me.

Does anyone know of hosting available now for that kind of low annual price?

Thanks

I like the prices, a bit annoying that the UK cant compete with prices the US was offering 5 years ago for the same service. But it should do

With respect, the problem isn't providing hosting @ $10 a year, it's providing it sustainably and reliably for $10 a year. Dreamhost's offers are a) introductory and b) you only have to look at their status pages to see the amount of problems they have every day.

The old saying you get what you pay for comes into play.

I get cheap hosting for testing stuff out but if its a site I want keeping up with decent support I always pay a few more sheckles :)

Possible, I'd say, but not really advisable. That TSOHost £15/year thing looks pretty limited. You only get 500MB webspace and 5GB bandwidth, which is going to evaporate pretty quickly if people actually look at your site. (Search engine spiders alone will eat up quite a lot of that bandwidth!) The uptime isn't going to be brilliant, plus you'll be crammed on a low-end server with thousands of other websites, so there's a good chance it'll be slow. The other thing is support - if something goes wrong, will they reply to you in five minutes or five days?

You can't really criticise because they are providing a service for a very low price. But if you're paying 4p a day for hosting then you'll get what you pay for!

As I director of the parent company of Tsohost I've got to reply to this.

Yes, it's limited, that's why it's £15/year. It's for people with a simple website (or possibly 2) who want a basic online presence.

Thousands of users would say quite the opposite.

plus you'll be crammed on a low-end server with thousands of other websites

You mean a cluster of 22 servers with load balancing, redundant backend storage, 8 way database servers on an all-cisco network? Crammed isn't the word.

so there's a good chance it'll be slow

Nope. Again thousands of users would disagree.

Much more like 5 minutes on average. That's the difference between hosting with a 5.5 year established business with real staff compared to a fly by night 'hobby host' with a day job.

You can criticise if it's crap. There's way too much competition in this industry for poor providers to be tolerated. You can get a lot for £15/year inc. VAT.

I am using tso host and they are fantastic, never had a problem with uptime and their support is fantastic, I was getting reply's within minutes.

They even helped me move a database because I was to stupid to do it :)

i recommend vidahost as they are so cheap (i think £16 per year is minimum) and provide unbelievably fast responses to questions i ask them, sometimes ihaven't had time to load more then one more page and they have replied with a full answer.

the user beansprout works for (actually i think owns) vidahost and is always in this area of the forum. think it's great when you can communicate directly with the staff just as with Adz above, i know previously registron was a little poor service many moons ago but it does appear that their service has improved some.

who would you rather give your money to? some random person who offers slightly cheaper hosting, or a "friend" you have talked directly with on a great forum like this?

edit: oh i know money is relative and all that tbh you will only manage to save peanuts at these prices as they are so ridiculously low. 4 hours of minimum wage and you can pay for hosting for a whole year is very cheap.

I'm this close to signing up to tso host but i think the 5GB is a bit too low

leaning towards register1.net

Fair enough, Adz - my comments were really just conjecture based upon the fact that £15/year is unusually cheap! Apologies if it seemed like I had a vendetta against TSOHost. I was speaking more of my experiences with really cheap hosting in the past - but after all, if you've been going for over 5 years then you must be doing a lot of things right! :)

sign up with tsohost and then if you need more space upgrade :) let them know and i'm sure they'll be able to put you on a better service if need be and then charge you the extra to make up for it. that way you get the cheap hosting and if you don't ened to space it doesn't get wasted and if you do just simple upgrade, comes with a 30 day money back guarantee any way so no lose

edit: what does the tso stand for?

No worries, I didn't think it was aimed specifically at Tsohost but it might have come across that way to people reading the thread so I had to refute it :).

Tsohost is a name Darren came up with in 2003. It's a palindrome.

£15/year buys a lot these days, just gotta buy from the right folk. Any established company in other words, like a couple of the ones mentioned in this thread :)

Marcos...wait until you try being hosted on a super-quick UK server which is just a few ms away

We're using TSOhost's £15/year package and have never had a single problem.

Also am using Vidahost (albeit on a higher-priced service as I require more from this service) and again, no issues.

No hesitations in recommending both!
