Hello
I have a Sapphire vapourx 7950 that works fine but either the cooler isn't working or the connector for the cooler on the card is faulty.

is there any sort of adapter that will let me change the four pin cooler connecter to molex?

http://s57.photobucket.com/user/dw_explosivo/media/P1080631_zps007376d4.jpg.html

before i go and buy a new cooler to find out it's the pins on the card.

you know, so i can have the two 8pin plugs in the card but to cooler running off a molex.

cheers

Do the fans spin at all, or are they dead?
Have a look at fan settings in Catalyst CC or Afterburner- it's rare for fan connectors to bork. May just need new thermal paste and a de-fluff. I'd imagine your card would quickly overheat and throttle with no cooling.
You probably could run them off a molex- but it'd be full beans and rather loud.

EDIT just looked at your photo-Ok defluff not required...

The card is brand new, well it's about 9 months old but Sapphire won't let me rma without pop (gift from ex)

the card works fine but the fans don't spin and never have

was thinking about taking the cooler off my 6950 and sticking it on the 7950 just to see if it's the connection on the gpu (would that work?)

tried overdrive and afterburner, they are both reporting that the fans are at 25% when they're not spinning.
turned the fans to 100% in overdrive, still nothing

Hmm.
I suppose it might be worth checking the pins on the card for loose solder joints, or any other visible anomaly.
Test the cooler with any fan connector- you can plug a 4-pin (PWM) fan into a 3-pin connector, it'll just go full whack.

The fans never spun? It's a miracle the card hasn't died.

Might be worth buying an aftermarket cooler, Arctic make some good ones.

Sorry but I cant see any way your card works 'fine' if the fans don't spin at all. These cards heat up very quickly when gaming and frankly its not possible your card would not overheat and shutdown within a couple of minutes, at most, if the fans are not spinning.:)

Ps I take it you don't have crossfire because if you have then it is possible one of the cards can shut off.

I have only ever put the card in to check if it worked, the first time i ever installed it i saw (well felt) that the fans were not spinning and removed it and stuck the 6950 back in.

i have not used the card for any gaming and i have never dared put it under any strain.

but i want to use the card, so i need some ideas.

is there any way i can test the vapourx cooler to see if it's faulty?

cheers

Would it be fine in a motherboard header?

I have seen pumps blow motherboard fan headers, while not often, often enough to make you not want to risk it. I imagine the fans on the GPU would probably require fair bit more power than normal fans, as there are two of them and they spin a lot faster than case fans.

Hmm, I would've thought it would work but I guess not? I have Arctic PWM fans and you can plug one into the other and then into the motherboard header (PST or something like that) - works fine for me

Yes, you can do that.
I've run two fans off a splitter from the CPU fan header for years with no problems.

Testing the cooler for a few seconds on a spare header (you can use a 3-pin header, just line the plastic tabs up) will be fine.

Are the fans definitely 12v though - sometimes GPU fans are 7.5v or sometimes even 5v etc. (You can get 12v to lower voltager convertors used to run normal fans at lower speeds but running a fan designed for lower voltages off a molex might not end well).

Case fans are different to GPU fans. You dont know what spec they are, what power they can use at full pelt or even what voltage they operate at.

Sure it can be fine but if 18w pumps can blow motherboard headers then the risk is still there with aftermarket GPU coolers. There are even Silverstone fans which come with their own variable resistors and only molex to only plug directly for to the PSU, so they do not damage motherboards or fan controllers with less than 20w channels.

If it didn't overheat, i would put it back in and try to actually see if the fans are running, or go into catalyst control and turn fans up to 100%.

Maybe the cooler is very quiet, my twin frozer is silent untill i put it under load then it's not. :(

*Sorry, just reread you have tried this.*
