Is this a bit steep for new front brake pads?

The brake light popped on my dash last week. I had the rear pads replaced last summer so I can only assume that the front pads are the cause.
I called Scotthall BMW for a quote. Prices include fitting. '08 Z4 3.0Si

Front pads - £210
Front discs - £220

Rear pads - £180
Rear discs - £185

Is that the going rate or does that seem a bit pricey?

Also, the car has 39k. Is it likely to need new discs?

Ta.

It shouldn't need new discs already but they may tell you they are knackered. The price is pretty much around what I would expect. The pads for my 5 series are about £100 just for the parts. Would be worth phoning around and getting them to price match as dealer quotes can vary hugely.

Not from BMW though and the quote is talking about main dealer prices. I know you can buy exactly the same part elsewhere but BMW have a large markup.

I thought so!

u have got a expensive car so things will be more costly.

Jut search google u can get pads cheaper
As far as I know, the brakes are pretty much the same as those on a 330. I know such a car attracts higher bills but it's no excuse for being ripped off.

Maybe I suck at bargaining but any time I have tried to get the dealers down this way to price match, they stick firm to their initial price and refuse to budge. :o

Why are you bothering taking your car to the dealer for discs and pads? I mean, i'm not suggesting you should take it to ***** Bob's back street workshop, but there are plenty of highly recommended BMW specialists who would not charge you £800 for new discs and pads.

Pagid/Textar discs are £120 for the fronts and are £70 for the rears. ATE/Textar/Pagid brake pads are £50 for the front £25 for the rear. Altogether that comes to £265 + £150 for someone to fit them and it comes out at just over half the price that the dealer wants.

My 325 ate it's front discs and pads at 29,000 miles, rear pads also dead at 29,000 miles.

I'll try dig the invoice out but I had pair of front tyres + brakes sorted, 1 litre of oil top up and two alloy wheel scuffs repaired - total bill £1200.

Agreed, Dealers usually tell you both need replacing at once.

you can usually make a set of discs last at least 2 sets of pads. Vauxhall tried this with me when i had the VXR. Used the same set of discs for another 10k after they recommended i change, and still had life left in the discs + pads then.

Err we know, the op has given us the price from BMW so its fairly obvious I am referring to the price elsewhere.

Scothall Leeds right? Try another BMW garage, but that is very expensive for Pads/Discs.

I would like to keep it as OEM as possible unless some of those alternatives can offer an improvement? I have no issue with taking the car to a specialist. I'm looking to get rid of the damn thing soon, anyway :D

Is there a section in the BMW SH for brake pads ? if not then just fit the OEM bmw ones yourself. Pads are easy. I'm a complete noob of a mechanic and i managed mine just fine on the VXR.

I think your Z4 has the same brakes as my 330i, and i know that ATE/Textar were the factory fit brake pads - meaning you're car would still be as OEM as the day it left the dealership. :)

Interestingly, if i wanted front brake pads changed on my car, i could have them fully fitted for £99. Even though yours is exactly the same labour and parts wise, they want £210 from you. So if BMW still make a profit from me at £99, this shows how much profit they make when someone pays £210.

Bartley BMW in the Totton area were extremely good with my old BMW. Really knew their stuff and prices were fairly cheap. My current lady sends her 325i there.

I'll give them a call, thanks :)

By the time I bought all of the necessary tools, I could have had the CEO of BMW replace them for me whilst being fed grapes by a unicorn for similar cost :p

I call it the douchebag tax. Because the car has 2 seats and is a bit flash, I must be a douchebag, therefore I must pay the tax :D

I agree with the 'read a guide and do them yourself'. You don't need to be a competent mechanic to change a set of pads. I'd be very surprised if the discs needed changing at that mileage. Go to your local quickfit and let them measure the thickness of the discs (for free).

The only tools you should need are a socket set, calliper winder / press tool, torque wrench and some copper grease, which comparatively to the prices quoted will save you loads.
