Is this a CPU upgrade needed?

Would like to know if I need to upgrade to a Ryzen 3K series CPU or to wait till something faster than 1080Ti is affordable..
Current system = 2700x, Gigabyte AX370 K7 mobo, Aorus 1080Ti, 16Gig 3200Mhz Flare X

99% use PC now for VR gaming. Below is MSI Afterburner trace of CPU/GPU usage. Need to know if changing to 3800x/3900x would sort out the drops to 45fps (ASW). Game is Dirt 2.0 (oculus runtime mode), High settings. Not changed SS at all...

Post #748, https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/ryzen-3900x-thread.18861505/page-38

Your graphs look like you are CPU bottle necked, having just read @stephenb thread I'm not convinced that it isn't the programming of the game itself.

Hi Andy - what car, stage, ToD, weather conditions was this? I've only got a 1080 but could give this a quick spin this evening to see what it is like with my 3900X. Original CV1 user here.

That would be great, thanks.
Track was Lydden that I bought extra as only have season 1&2 DLC. Car was T16, just me doing a few laps Time Trial. Weather clear/sunny daytime

Looking at those charts, I don't think you are limited by cores (it looks quite poorly threaded i.e. it's only 1 or two threads hitting high utilisation, overall cpu utilisation tops out at under 50%) so a 3900X would be a waste of money. I'd say you want a Ryzen 3000 series with as high a clock speed as possible.

The other interesting thing on those charts is to compare what is going on when the FPS drops. There is a strong correlation between gpu usage and framerate, i.e. the fps drops when the gpu utilisation drops. Ordinarily this would point to a CPU bottleneck. But if you look at the CPU utilisation, there isn't much of a correlation, it's not like the CPU usage is spiking. Are you sure there is nothing else going on here, some sort of hitch due to paging, disk access, glitchy game etc?

Finally you have an 8 core CPU but only 4 cpus being tracked, can you get a screenshot with all 8 (or 16) cpus shown?

There wasn’t much going on on other cores so I left those out of the log to condense the image. I don’t have anything else running and RAM usage was only ~6gig from what I remember.
AFAIK, to keep 90fps all processing and rendering has to happen within a 11.11mS time period. As soon as the runtime decides it can’t keep up ASW kicks in and the GPU has half the rendering workload, which may show as the drop in % seen. Usually the biggest task during the ‘frametime’ is the rendering but here may be a lot of physics going on

Dunno how VR works but do you have vsync enabled and if so can it be disabled? Dropping from 90fps to 45fps seems indicative of vsync when the frametime exceeds 11.2ms. If vsync is required is there a triple buffer feature that would reduce the fps drops to 60fps?

There’s not a vsync option for VR really. It’s either 90fps or it automatically drops to 45fps (interleaved). You can turn off ASW but you then get motion sickness issues. VR is demanding as you basically have 2 * 1080 x 1200 screens that need to run at 90Hz.

Made a quick vid with the Oculus performance overlay enabled. As you can see a couple of momentary drops but otherwise 90FPS all the way. Used the high graphics preset. RAM at 3400C16 and my GPU will boost at 2Ghz all day long.

Thanks loads for that stephenb, gonna order a 3900x now. I may be able to tweak my RAM up a bit from XMP profile using calculator otherwise I replace that too.

My 3900x arrived from Overclockers today. I’d already updated to latest BIOS. Set optimised defaults, set PBO to enabled instead of Auto, and changed DRAM freq. to 3400 on top of XMP (no voltage changes). Loaded up Dirt 2.0 in VR and repeated same ‘test’.
Rock solid 90fps.

Happy with that
