Is this a good graphics card?

Hi,

I am building an HTPC and after I bought a Sapphire 6670 Ultimate I found out the hard way that it does not fit into my case as it is too high due to the large heatsink on the card (passively cooled).

OCuK won't take this back as it has been a month and 7 days since I bought it, but I didn't start building it till 3 days ago because some other parts from my mate's were not here yet. Anyway I don't blame OCuK...

Now the HTPC will be used for 1080p 3D, blu-rays, DVDs, SKY HD and some light gaming and web browsing.

I was thinking of buying a GTX 460 instead as some of them do not have tall heatsinks or heatpipes.

I was thinking about this card:
EVGA Nvidia 1GB GeForce GTX 460 Superclocked Graphics Card 01G-P3-1372-KR

Will this be a good card for the above activities... Also the GTX460s seem to have vanished so this is the only card I managed to find... what happened to them?

Thanks

Theyre old thats why hard to find
It will do those tasks easily
The only issue you may have will be heat/noise, this is a proper gaming card, as such OTT really for the needs of a HTPC, that being said Ive just transferred my old rig incl 560Ti into HTPC :D

lol nice one ;)

thing is i want to do some light gaming as well and the gtx 460 is a good card for gaming... regarding heat and noise... i don't think it will be an issue when watching blu ray and 3d because the card would not be worked much... am I correct in assuming this?

Also, regarding the brand of the card is EVGA and that particular card a good one? (never had nvidia before)

And since they are old, is it wise/good to invest in such a card or should I look at something else?

Thanks

95thrifles is right is a real good card that wont struggle with anything, but are you aware that a 460 is actually a dual slot card a not a single slot one like the 6670?

Meaning you will probably have just as much trouble trying to fit it in?

By dual slot you mean it takes 2 thingies in the back? (sorry not much of an expert on GFX cards). Because the 6670 Ultimate is dual slot as well.

If it's any help my mobo is a Asus Gene-Z with an i3 2100 and a Big Shuriken cooler. The case is a Lian Li PC-C50B.

The reason why the 6670 Ultimate did not fit was because of the height cause the lian li case has kind of a stick (bracket) from front to back to hold the hdd cages and the gfx and the bracket were both in the middle so the bracket would not fit in the case because of the height of the gfx.

Also if someone can answer my other questions in my previous reply that'd be great.

Thanks

Oh my apologies, didn't read the ultimate bit. In which case are you still certain it will fit?, I cannot imagine it being much smaller and wouldn;t want you to waste your money on another card.

and yes EVGA are among the best manufacturers available along with Asus and Gigabyte

Thanks for confirming EVGA is a good card... I assume it will be better and faster than the 6670 ultimate?

The 6670 was almost 14cm tall from the heatsink to the pci-e of the card, that is why it did not fit... the case can take long cards but not tall so much...
To be on the safe side I am going to buy from my local place and if it does not fit, I am going to return it the next day!

Regarding the questions I need answered I was thinking more about this:

  1. Regarding heat and noise... i don't think it will be an issue when watching blu ray and 3d because the card would not be worked much... am I correct in assuming this?
  2. And since they are old, is it wise/good to invest in such a card or should I look at something else?

Thanks once again!

Considerably
Yes it should scale back when not being worked
50/50 really, an alternative would be to look at a newer 500 series card, what budget have you for gfx though? how much you paying for the 460?

I am paying a 150 EUR for it... cheapest I could get locally...

or £115 if I get it from the UK...

still don't know whether to get a 460 or a 560 now... but I feel like I would be wasting money on a 560 for light gaming and most of all for blu ray and 3d..

ideas?

Just go for the 460 if its easy for you to source locally, the option option would be a 550Ti which would run cooler and quieter, both generally and when gaming, but doesnt offer quite as much punch when gaming either. As you say I doubt youll hear the 460 during normal/light use anyway

Thinking of going for the 460 since it is available locally... We have the 560 as well but it is a 100 euro more and I don't think it is worth the money, heat and extra noise for what I need!

Absolutely no need to buy a 560, a 460 is overkill as it is.

A 460 is equal to or in some cases better than a 6850

Hi I just bought an EVGA 460 SC and it fit in the case so I am very happy :D

Now a question... I will use a HDMI V1.4 to support 3D to connect it to my 3D TV (Panny 65VT30).

Now the EVGA takes a mini-hdmi and in the box there was an HDMI to Mini-HDMI adapter. If I use an HDMI to HDMI 1.4 and put one end in the adapter... will I lose the 1.4, i.e is the adapter according to class (v1.3, 1.4 etc) as well like the cable?

Or I can just use the adapter and still have V1.4?

Edit... The adapter that came with the card looks like this one.

Thanks
