Hi, I was just wondering whether I should get the Logitech MX518 gaming mouse.

I'm planning to use the mouse for FPS and MMO use in conjunction with the Sidewinder X4 keyboard.

What are your experiences with this mouse? Is it comfortable? Fast enough?

Thanks,

CheesySpread

Well, its fine really.

Its a low end gaming mouse made by a reputable manufacturer. Each to their own will have different opinions on Logitech, but otherwise its shape and layout seem nothing special you can't imagine.

I've personally found Logitech stuff to be not as well built as I'd like it to be in terms of mice/keyboards, but hey I'm one ex customer, you will find many here who love Logitech.

I'd say this would last you a couple years max? The buttons seems nicely placed, but rather lightly built for there near flush design. If they get pressed to hard, they might not come up again. The mouse wheel too looks kinda flimsy, buy hey, I might be wrong? It might well be worth every one of its 20 odd pounds.

If you like the sidewinder X4 keyboard, you should perhaps look at upping your mouse budget and joing for a X8 mouse, as its cordless and has a mapping key. It depends how long you want to keep your mouse though.

Logitech have some oof the best build quality of any peripheral company. They also have THE BEST customer service in the industry pretty much. The MX 518 is at the top end of optical gaming mice, all the newer models are laser instead. Personally I prefer the G5/G500 as they have more buttons etc, but many prefer the extra speed or w/e of an optical sensor over the laser.

When people recommend mice on this board it consists of a few models, tending to be something like the mx 518, G5, G500, death adder, copper head and some other razer mouse, intelli mouse and maybe the razer naga if you only play mmo's and want a million extra buttons.

These are not in order.

mx518's are so good ive got two :p

no honestly they are great mice. best value for money by a long long way and as mentioned already, logitech's customer service is pretty much unrivaled. Not just in their own industry but any industry. That company set's the standard as far as im concerned.

The bonus with the MX 518 is Logitech's customer service is the best around. Personally I have the G500 which is a great mouse, but loads of people on here use the 518.

I'm pleased that you guys are all in the same experience with knowing the Logitechs customer service is so good. It makes me want to try them out again.

But how do all 3 of you know they're so good? Have you had to return any mice within warranty with them?

I wouldn't worry about speed and "lag" that much with different laser/optical technologies. If your blaming your mouse, your a poor gamesman, and your connection quality will make a much bigger difference to your gaming experience than your mouse technology ever will.

I had a g15 rev two and one raising leg broke 1.5 years out of warranty and they gave me a 50% voucher. I have had 4 mice, 3 keyboards and 2 speakers sets from them and thats the only fault I have had in all that time.

The optical/laser thing is what some people care about, on its own it is negligable, but it you add up input lag etc on everything from monitor and mouse etc it can add up to quite a lot, so people minimise it, why use inferior products if you are playing for money? You want every advantage and no disadvantages you can get. I do not personally care THAT much though, and cannot notice a difference between a decent laser mouse and a good optical.

my two mx518's are used at home with my laptop and at work. my main mouse at home as actually a logitech g9 and honestly performance-wise there's very little in it - they both track perfectly accurately right up to silly speeds. the g9 pip's it because of the customization available (different bodies, different weights ect) but the actually performance is so close that you wouldnt notice it unless they were side-by-side.

Thats what makes the mx518 the best value mouse available :)

I've had one for years and never had any problems with it. I've also tried a Kone+ and a RAT7 and went back to the Mx. Really really good mouse, well worth the money.

Not to be an ass and all but, if it's such a good mouse why do you need excellent customer service? does it break a lot?

A mouse is personal preference, I couldn't get on with my last logitech, am a razer fan. These are for more hardcore gamers :P

I use the same combo for WoW. Works fine.

You may want to check out uberOptions after you've installed the Logi drivers. This enables per app button bindings which Logitech doesn't allow on a MX518 in the software.
The biggest failing of the 518 is that it's polling rate and dpi are a lot lower than todays newer offerings. It's a great mouse but in need of a sensor and polling rate upgrade.

If you play a healer you probably want to bind the thumb buttons to keypresses (like [ and ] ). This means you wont need to use mods like Clique and your mouse presses will work on all frames. This is because assignments like 'Mouse Button 4' and so on also count as a standard left click by default. This leads to issues with some frames and also works around problems in games other than WoW.

1.5 years out of warranty and they gave you a 50% off voucher? Damn that is good customer service, as you go out and buy a top of the range Logitech mouse for half price. Hmmm, I might have to try Logitech again knowing that :)

I've had the equivelent MX510 for 7 years and its only just starting to show signs of wear with one side button not working. Definately built to last and good mouse for general gaming.
