Hey all,

I'm looking at getting my first car. I've been driving for about 2 years now, and have done a few various advanced courses, but have been strapped for cash and stuck using my mum's car.

Now I'm looking to buy, and was wondering your opinions on THIS.

Thanks :)

Ok, ignoring el'toolo 2 posts above me . The primera was a good platform back in its hayday, only outclassed by the mondeo for handling ability. I happen to think they look rather nice with the right wheels and in the right colour, but i'm sure you can get better than an SLX for the money.

Is £500 a strict budget?

What? It's 500 quid dude, better than an SLX? Like what? SLX was a decent trim level.

MY EYES, MY EYES

It's not that bad! :p

No mention of Tax or MOT. If it has no MOT then steer well clear. You could have found a bargain though. Just avoid it without an MOT.

Primeras are generally bargains and have good chain cam engines. The 2litre isnt that fast unless you get the SRI or GT which are still not expensive and have amazing suspension as stock. Avoid the 1.6 as its underpowered

Anything that old will need a personal judgement of course, well worth a look :)

If the car and engine seem in good condition, then yeah - £500 is a total bargain, it should be nearer £800-£900. The advert makes no mention of any service history, tax, or MOT though - so be wary.

The SRI is a bit of a phoney it is the same 128BHP lump shared by the rest of the range, only the GT has the 150.

128BHP lump is still very willing and gives good economy. You can't really go wrong with a Primera IMO.

I thought it was slightly more powerfull then the other 2 litres, the suspension is different then..
Only problem with the GT is its a much higher insurance group

My friend here in cyprus has one, it has a turbo conversion on it and is a total monster...

But anyway, they are a good car

:D

Boring etc etc etc. Good car tho if it has been looked after. Very good cars.. It's the usual Nissan thing not very glam but reliable motoring.

Apart from being the most boring car ever created ;) , the Primera isn’t too bad I suppose. I wouldn’t worry too much about tax and service history as it’s only a £500 pound car. If it doesn’t have a reasonable amount of time left on the MOT I’d stay well away, there are plenty of other cars in this price range with almost a year’s MOT.

As with any car, take it for a test drive before handing over any money, make sure you start the car with a cold engine and restart the engine after you’ve been for a drive and the engine has warmed up, to check for any problems.

Watch out for the ABS kicking in when breaking gently at low speeds, IIRC the abs rings are prone to failing, my old car had the same problem and it lead to a couple of iffy moments when the car decided not to brake.

I’d also check the condition of the coolant and oil, the coolant is a pain to change properly and a lot of places do a rubbish job of it.
