Very out of the loop lately but I am looking to upgrade/build this year at Xmas :D

Wondering if any of you knowledgeable people can confirm if this is any good or not - I will mostly be gaming may switch from 1080p to 1440p in future and maybe adding a second monitor.

My budget is not really a budget following items are being gifted to me for xmas

Intel Core i5 6600K Processor
Asus Z170 PRO Gaming Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) 3000 MHz DDR4
Cooler Master RR-212E-16PK-R1 Hyper 212 Evo Universal CPU Cooler

I will be buying the GPU - I really seem drawn to the AMD R9 390X 8GB are these cards good for 1080p possibly more? Not looking into SLI or anything as I dont think my PSU will be high enough rated by today's standards for that?

I am currently gaming on 60Hz 1080P monitor

One thing I am completely stuck on is what case to go for - I don't want to spend a fortune and to the best of my knowledge I cannot use my old one as its an MATX after inspecting.

There are so many options everywhere but ideally I don't want to spend more than 40 or 50 pound if I can help it.

Will be reusing a 1TB HDD and 128GB SSD from my old PC - May get a new SSD as well for games and use the 128 as system only.

PSU I currently have is a Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 700W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply - Which was recommended to my from my last posts a few years ago here it has never gave me any issues so far and has happily ran with a HIS HD 7850 IceQ X 2048MB GDDR5.

So would the above choices plus the GPU coupled with everything I already have seem ample for the next few years?

Sounds good amigo, yes the 390X is a good choice for 1440p as the 8GB VRAM would be beneficial.

What type of case do you want i.e colour and side window or not?

The r9 390x is superb mine arrived yesterday and it absolutely max every game with good fps at 1080p. Not sure on 1440 yet as I'm waiting on my monitor to arrive. As for a case it's really subjective but I have a phanteks enthoo luxe which is an amazing case with plenty of room and tons of features. The build quality is excellent and the window shows off all my hard work!

Thanks for the input guys.

Which models of the 390X did you go for?

I'm thinking the gaming edition but the DD also looks like a good deal.

Case I would like to have plenty of room and be black or red would prefer a window but if its going to cost more just for that luxury I could do without - Suppose cooling and dust is also something to consider?

edit - Would like the case to be able to house my Blu-Ray drive as well

I researched the r9 390x for around 3 months before settling on my purchase. I was going to go for msi as it would fit my build but then heard it gets rather hot. Looked at the xfx DD but apparently has coil whine under load. After much deliberation I settled on the powercolor pcs+ for the excellent cooler and good reviews. I'm glad and happy. Whilst running fallout 4 with every setting maxed out temp were 62c and around 60c for gta v maxed out. The cooler is large and covers the whole card and then some. The shroud is metal not plastic and has a superb backplate with heat pads between the pcb. It is an excellent build quality imo.

Well bought the case as I love the look of it thanks Dacads much appreciated I looked at similar but kept going back to this one the color is perfect :)

Also got a Samsung 250GB SSD 850 Evo SSD

Good to hear Fallout 4 is working well with that card mate as that's going to be one of my go to games for a long time.

I did read about Coil Whine on the DD version but in all honesty I have no idea what that is - This will be my first ever complete build so most of this is knew to me.

Made a good choice then :)

My other one is a Crucial Real SSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s

Was looking to use the larger drive for games and the 128 for system - Will there be that much of a difference to sacrifice the 250 one for system and only a few games?

I've noticed a difference between the Samsung 250GB 840 and 850 EVO, and I would rate the 840 over that M4 for the significantly better write speeds. You're not gonna need the write speeds for gaming so I'd use the M4 as an overflow drive.

Thanks mate food for thought I will only ever be playing a couple of games at a time anyway I suppose.

I have a few externals and HDD's with USB IDE connections for storing any rubbish aswell

Just an update for you all PC has been built and running fine for most of Jan.

First time doing a build and was quite pleased when it was all done - Will get some decent pictures up at some point.

Ended up going for the R9 390X VT3XD 8GB GPU - Can be loud at some points but this dosent bother me to much.

Anyways thanks again.

Edit - Should have also said I ended up getting the i7 not the i5
