Is this a hash job? Kitchen worktops

that is pretty bad, not even sure how you'd get it that bad with a router and worktop jig. ask for money back and two new worktops.

Nope, we haven't paid.

He was recommended to us by good friends who have used him on their reno but he's just a handyman, so with hindsight we're now wondering how experienced he is with kitchens. He was half the price of the builders we're using for everything else but he took ages and the end result is, well, that.

And yes, he did have a jig...

That's pretty bad mate, but possibly salvageable if you have a little bit to play with on the ends of those worktops, needs breaking apart and re-cutting. Normally on a square edge timber worktop you would just butt them and not bother with a masons mitre (still recess for bolts) a masons mitre is for rounded edge worktops, a decent chippy should be able to sort that out. Never scrimp on the fitting of worktops - get a professional in.

We didn't bother with a mitre and it's a far batter finish. How long since the work was done, the glue still looks fresh, may be worth waiting a day or two to review or. At the end of the day, solid wood worktops are supposed to look rustic whereas granite/marble/others are supposed to look perfect.

I'm a joiner and have fitted a fair few kitchens and can say thats not a very good job at all. I'm not even sure how he has managed to get it so bad, when using a jig and router it give 2 perfectly matching joints.

You should have an invisible join that has been glued together with waterproof PVA, no silicone or filler or whatever that is.

Also I'd suggest just giving the edge a slight round over with a router before its all fixed and tiled etc. Looks better than the sharp square edge imo.

If he'd used a filler with a colour closer to that of the wood, it'd look a fair bit better. The misalignment on the first one would really bother me, though. I'd expect to do a better job myself, even having never done it before.

Thats looks quite naff. Shocking really.

I would tell him so and you require replacement tops but someone else to fix them unless you give him a 2nd chance but only on new worktops that 'he' pays for!

What is the rest of his work like?
