Is this a misleading antenatal/pregnancy related HR policy?

If you're a small enough business to not have an HR dept, then it's probably a bought in or AI generated policy of some sort that probably doesn't really quite align with what the management actually want.

Edit - just found a word for word copy of that policy (but bulleted not numbered) online.
Could you share a link?
 
Ooof looks like someone copied someone elses staff handbook and didn't understand what some sections mean.

Considering the bit for the pregnant women has the same wording in effect in regards paid time off, then to me thats 100% company paid time off.
The handbook looks like it comes from a fairly well balanced company so not unexpected you can support your partner under those circumstances.
 
Can you not just;

"I won't be online until after lunch next Tuesday as I have a hospital appointment."

?

Assuming you can wfh I mean.

"Officially" our policy says I may take paid time off to attend two antenatal appointments and after that they would be either unpaid or taken by annual leave. "Unofficially" I've taken a few appointments and just made up the hours back.

The two appointments can be a bit of an issue, as that really only limits you to a 12 week and 20 week scan. Despite being low risk pregnancy there's still quite a few appointments. God knows anyone who are high risk must have significantly more appointments.

My wife was having scans every 4 weeks along with the various other appointments iirc due to being high risk.
 
I think that policy is very clear and from that policy you do NOT have to use annual leave as it clearly states 'You may take PAID time off'.

Obtain a copy of the appointment. Scan it, book an appointment through your companies system and attach the scanned copy of the appointment. Exactly the same as you would do if you were going to a normal doctor's appointment. Job done.

Your MD cannot read if they genuinely said that policy means to use annual leave :cry:
 
I'll just say to the MD that i'll be taking a few hours out next week to go to the appointment, if he comes back about booking annual leave then i'll discuss further.

Annual leave is completely different to paid leave. Annual leave is holiday leave - your time that you have accrued whilst working ,to be off work for exactly that - a holiday/relax/rest etc and get paid for it.

Paid leave is just that, leave away from work but paid, for things such as hospital appointments, funerals etc. It's not for going on holiday etc.

Lol what a word salad. You've just swapped the word annual for holiday.

You get paid leave and unpaid leave. Categories of paid leave include your regular vacation days, bereavement, bank holidays, maybe charity days. This is down to the policy of the employer.

One would assume paid leave in this policy is specific to the issue of appointments but it is ambiguous in that paid leave will be defined elsewhere.
 
First off, Congratulations - I hope you took finding out better than I did :p

That sounds like you should be allowed to go with your partner to those appointments from my understanding.
 
I cannot think of a time I have seen paid leave mean use of vacation days.

Every time I have seen a contract allow the use of vacation in order to do something it has specifically said vacation.

That is how my policies at work are also worded. Paid leave is what I get for doctors / dentist appointments etc. In our emergency leave policy, where I can be off work to look after a dependent, it is worded I can take paid leave but in most cases only a few days which should allow other arrangements to be made. After that I would have to use annual leave if needed.

Whilst what dlockers states is true I have never seen annual leave worded as paid leave in a work policy before.
