is this a scam?

Lots of calls up this way.

Only heard of a couple of people falling for it though around here though i am sure there are many more.
 
They can get quite threatening by saying things like you will be reported to your isp and cut off if you dont get it fixed right away by them.

They charge between £70 and £160 to run various maintenance programs like junk cleaners, registry cleaner and defrag programs.

Some have refused to pay so the guy the other end starts deleting data starting with the desktop just to frighten them :(

Very sad especially if they are silver surfers and dont know better.

I had a call myself once and i just asked thenm what my ip address was if they knew it was my pc causing the problems...long silence followed by hang up...not called back though i wish they would so i could waste as much of their time as possible :)
 
Wow, that's horrible.

I really want them to phone me now, I'd happily play dumb for a very long time just to wind them up. Scumbags.

This is the kind of stupid stuff my grandma kept falling for before she got put in a home. She got conned out of 3,000 pounds by one of those timeshare scams, luckily we managed to get her money back after much trouble.

I don't know how these people can sleep at night !
 
Ah my mums gets these all the time, she knows little about computers but taken the time to research some techy sounding phrases to throw back at them and confuse them :D (even she knew it was a scam from the start).
 
Yep I get the same international phone calls ,answer machine picks its up and get recordings off people "indian accents" speaking very good english, saying hello, hello etc to a answering machine!
