Is this advert misleading?

In FSX you can add a Job Scheduler line to the fsx.cfg file and assign up to 4 cores to be used. Here's a quote from an FSX tweak guide that I used:

"Allows the user to force FSX to create or not create additional threads in a multi-core or multi-processor environment. This may be useful in a QUAD core environment where you wish to use only 3 cores for FSX, but leave another one free for Windows or other programs to use. ACES recommends NOT adding this line unless you have a specific need and knowledge of what you are doing. FSX supports up to several hundred cores, but the following settings are the only ones provided from ACES at this time."

I have a Q9650 and added the Job Scheduler line to the .cfg file. I assigned 3 cores to the sim. Originally only one core ran maxed at 3 GHz, now 3 cores run at about 75% to 85% and the sim is a lot smoother.
Crikey, I haven't heard of that before - it's a cool way of making use of the extra cores :)

I wonder if the Job Scheduler can be used on any game :confused:

Incidentally I wonder what sort of performance increase a quad core CPU like in the above advert manages over a single core CPU, perhaps 20% :confused:

Just curious :o

Well my old PC (single core 2.4) would convert video files at a rate of 1 movie per hour, my PC in sig (ok, it's OC'd a little) will convert the same files in 15 mins!

Obviously the gains to be had from extra cores are very dependent on the software utilisation, but in the instance above, it is 4 times faster.

If a game, or any software for that matter, was capable of creating extra threads for multiple cores, then I guess you could schedule multiple cores. But the core codes in FSX probably wouldn't work for other software. You can try it out if you want and let everyone know. Here's the line that needs to be added to the .cfg file, where ? = 1, 3, 7, or 15:

[JobScheduler]
AffinityMask=?

1 = Use 1 core
3 = Use 2 cores
7 = Use 3 cores
15= Use 4 cores

This is all down to over selling by making everything sound better than it really is. The common bay way of persuading the customer to part with his money. Just done it myself..but there you go, it is a free market. As long as you stay within the law, buyer beware!

I'm surprised that quad core hasn't had more support from software writers :eek:

I think quad core processors have been out for over a year :confused:

Over two years, the Q6600 was launched in January 2007. I agree with you though, it is disappointing that games and applications aren't taking more advantage of multi-core CPUs.

Yes, it's misleading. It's also a rubbish PC. Crappy ASRock mobo, dubious Maxtor HD, awful graphics card (who wants a 2400Pro in a quad-core system?)
