Is this amd build ok?

Np, have fun building it - Haj and RJC did all the hard graft.

If you fancy a play with Win 7 you can run a dual boot system - just make sure that Vista is on the first partition. Below are some links and codes if you're interested.

Here's the direct link for Win 7 64 bit - link

However, you must right click the link and choose save as - if you left click the link it will redirect you to the W7 homepage.

And these are the 64 bit keys that you need - any will do:

Wow, £172 for 4GB of RAM?!?!?

My 6GB triple channel Corsair Dominators were cheaper than this!!!

If I were building an AMD PII rig, I wouldn't use that RAM...

::edit::

Sorry, I never read through the entire thread,, I see you changed it!!!

Wise move!

Cheers, that's low enough effort that I'm probably going to give it a try. Need to find a blank dvd first of course, but still. Do you happen to have the md5sum for the iso? I can't find it on the microsoft website, and am reluctant to try a 3gb iso without checking it first

Np, i used the following info from the Win 7 thread:

Windows 7 RC Build 7100 x64

Filename: 7100.0.090421-1700_x64fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GRC1CULXFRER_EN_DVD.iso
File size: 3.04 GB (3,270,828,032 bytes)
MD5 Hash: 98341AF35655137966E382C4FEAA282D

It's a monster of a thread, with a life of its own, but it's useful if you run into difficulties as most of the common problems users have experienced seemed to have been resolved through replies:

EDIT: I have a 32 bit link, codes and MD5 Hash if you need it - just bump this thread if you're interested.

Don't run programmes and OS off a WD green drive. They are slow. They're great for storage, but not much else.

I'd get a 320gb sammy F1 for OS and programmes, and a green for storage if I were you.

Sorry for the hijack, but cheers Plec. Download has the right md5sum, so all good to go once I track down a blank dvd. Don't worry about the 32 bit version, I'm reasonably pleased with XP for that. Perhaps windows 7 will bring me back to microsoft after vista so firmly sent me away.

Agreed, the early Vista release was a nightmare the irony being it's now become a very stable OS and then MS release Win 7 RC1 - go figure?

I'm still using a dual boot system, XP Pro and Win 7, on my main rig but, TBH, i'm finding that i'm mailny using Win 7 - it really is that good and has some great features which you start to rely on very quickly. The only reason I keep the XP installed is for the software that refuses to co-operate with Win 7.

Vista works these days? Oh well, I don't mind missing out on this. Xp works fairly well these days too, but eventually I'm going to have to move on. Windows 7 is a useful thing to spend a few weeks with at least, it's only a matter of time until one of my friends brings me a broken laptop running it :)

Most of the time I use linux, which rather reduces the motivation to find a new copy of windows. User friendly is less important than a system I can customise. Even basic things like ramdisks seem to give windows problems.

Cheers Plec, I'll probably track down the thread if I run into problems with it. Don't suppose you know offhand how large a partition it needs? If it's light enough it'll get a space on a vertex.

How goes the amd build? Any parts arrived yet?

Nope not as yet :(

My asus 4870x2 is out of stock and i dont wana go for one of the single fan versions of the card, so im holding tight :(

Should be in stock tomorrow, so we'll see what Monday brings

Jessica, welcome to the forums - that was such a polite cold call. ;)

The MS site states that a 20 gig partition is required for a win 7 64 bit install - yet some ppl find they only need between 10 - 16 gig. With this in mind would you be able to answer JonJ678's question as to the size of the partition he would require if you knew his complete spec?

His question was directed at me but i'm unable to answer it properly - i'm hoping your informed estimate would be far more useful to him.

Hopefully, you'll see you're subscribed to this thread and read this... (If not i link to it via another thread you've just replied on later.)

It doesn't look like, JessicaD, is coming back with a reply to my request - but fortunately, well for you, I've had to do a reinstall of Win 7 64 bit as i've bought a new HDD to separate my 2 oprating systems (plus i'm thinking of finally taking a look at Linux - so i may have a few questions for you at a later date as from reading other threads you seem very clued about non MS OSs). The total Win 7 64 bit install: after critical updates, some recommended and all upto date hardware drivers was approx 8.63GB. (I don't add on any additional driver crap - so my driver intstalls are all minimum.)

My spec is in my sig and i'm running 2 monitors and 1 printer and the peripherals are pretty much standard...

Could you fit in on with the space you have left on the vertex?

Hope the hijackers dont mind me hijacking my thread back ;)

Anyways, my parts came yesturday, all up and running now, so I took a few random photos.

The Antec 902 case is much better than my old 900 was, much easier to hide the wires (yes I know its stil quite messy, but if you seen my antec 900 wires  )
