Is this an MOT failure?

I have the MOT coming up in June and the rear brake pad wear sensor has just triggered so I had a look around the car to see what else might need sorted before I send it in for the work. The front drivers side tyre has this...

The rim protector part of the tyre appears to have been sheared off. It's about 5 inches long and from what I can see, it's just the rim protector lip. The tyre sidewall appears to be normal.

I don't know how this happened. I haven't hit any kerbs. The only explanation I can think of is that I'm a very regular user of the Purple Parking Meet & Greet service at Heathrow and maybe one of their drivers has damaged the tyre somehow? It does seem very weird though as there is no damage to the wheel at all. I'd have thought kerbing the weel hard enough to rip off the rim protector would at least result in a scuff of the rim?

Anyway, will this cause an MOT failure? There's a good 5k+ left in the tyre and given the price of the things, it would be a damn shame if I had to replace it.

Thanks :)

Depends how anal the MOT tester is, but that shouldn't fail it's MOT.

the protector is missing, but theres no damage to the wall. so no, that should pass. though you may get an advisory on it depending on the tester.

I'll put it through and see what happens. I could do without an extra £400 on top (maybe less if I ditch the runflats) :p

Rim protector just doing its job, no deep cuts or exposed fibres it will be fine.

Tread looks a little worn on the side though even if its far from the best angle.

Advisory for wear at the leading edges imo.

I'd be surprised if the missing rim protector is an issue - its very quickly torn off HGV's when a new tyre is fitted, they come back from test with the same tyres (well, my Scania did a few weeks back anyway!)

I'll be interested to see how you get on mate. :)

Kwik fit would probably fail it mind you.
Its a lottery with Krap fit!

I took my e39 to the local branch (Newcastle-under-Lyme for those who want to know who to avoid!!) as I had a grinding sound under breaking, they - much to my surprise - found no fault, fast forward to my MOT last week and it failed on a seized handbrake (which tbh I never use) and needed new handbrake shoes, new rear disc and rear pads.

Having seen the disc, and noticed the dramatic improvement in braking, I'm shocked - but, tbh not surprised, they missed a golden fleecing chance!!!

Thats not a failure, the law stipulates that fabric in the tyre wall shown is a failure. You could have flaps all over the car tyre side walls so long as there are no signs of the this.
