Everything peaked a few years ago. Many people got roped into the whole keeping up with the Jones' culture. Let's face it, from a materialistic point of view, most people have everything they want. You buy something new and find it's not a whole lot better than what you had. The disappointment sets in, it's just the same old same old. Also, most people these days are slobs who sit on Facebook who haven't actually got much of a life.
You could also say many people have had life too easy, not having to put much effort into anything and generally just apathetic. I do think the world is going into reverse however, and anyone who thinks they have things hard now is going to be in for a shock. I can see huge job losses and difficult financial times ahead. There's just too many people in the world and so I expect that means a culling, however that may occur is something I'm not privy to.

Take a look at life for ordinary people at the peak of the industrial revolution, consider what a lot of people endured in the world wars.
