Is this as safe as turning a plug socket off?

Personally all my electrical equipment is wired up via an RCD for extra safety and every night I isolate my gear by simply pressing the BLUE test button on my RCD.

I also don't think tripping the RCD is necessary thats just going too far.
And usually it's only ground floor sockets that need to be protected by an RCD.

Do it.

Turn everything on just for a night, and see what happens.
This is only likely to work when attempting to distract evil-doers from taking over the universe (a la Star Trek). :)

I'd say that using an RCD to turn equipment off isn't particularly a good idea, though I suppose it does serve to ensure the RCD is working when you need it to work.

I actually have my PC plugged into a socket gadget that detects when the main unit is off then after 5 seconds switches of anything else plugged into the adaptor. Therefore, I can shut down my PC and my monitor, router, speakers & printer turn off automatically. I now that the amount of energy and time saved this way is probably small but every little helps both my pocket and the planet.

Likewise I have my TV, DVD player, DVD recorder, lounge lamp, PS2 and Xbox all connected to radio-controlled home-automation plugs. Marvellous. That way I can be "green" and not leave my kit on standby without the hassle of actually getting up and hitting the OFF button. Just click a button on my remote on the way to bed. :D
