Had a new 24" TFT a week or two ago and just got round to checking it for bleeding and stuff. Its a Viewsonic Optiquest Q241wb

TFT Off :

TFT on with a blank screen

It has no dead/stuck pixels and its great for gaming, just wondering if the above was normal. The lower pic looks a lot brighter than it actually is

nope it looks fine to me. backlight bleed is when the edges are noticably brighter than the rest of the screen. Yours is pretty uniform.

Completely uniform is not something you get unless you're willing to pay for a higher-end panel, yours looks completely acceptable.

Hard to tell if it's backlight bleed or a problem with viewing angle. If it's consistantly brighter at the bottom then it's probably a backlight-bleed along the edge. But the bad vertical viewing angle on TN does usually mean that the top and/or bottom will be a little bit off, unless your position and distance is perfect.

if you're sitting at a normal eye level, then your brightness should be pretty uniform over the entire screen. There should only really be a change in brightness levels, if you view the screen from below, or above. If you find it isn't uniform when you're sitting directly infront of it, and it bugs you, you should RMA it, as its not right.

A closer look at your pic, shows that the top of the screen is just slightly darker than the bottom. From the pic, it doesn't look bad enough to be noticable when watching movies or playing games. My Acer G24 does have the same issue, but on a much much worse scale. So much so that its painful trying to play games, as I have to stand up, just to be able to see whats at the top of the screen.... its that dark.

remember that an LCD works by shining a bright light through a liquid crystal matrix, some will always leak through which is why LCD's don't have the black levels of a CRT or Plasma.
