Just wondering if this build would be ok for 1080p video editing and some gaming. I wanted to start a micro-atx project to replace my current ATX build.
I know i could do with an aftermarket cooler but im not planning on overclocking the CPU any time soon, Also the 4k monitor is just in there as an extra.. not exactly vital to the build.
Any advice would be appreciated =)
Hi Terley,
The i7-4790 is not overclockable at all. You'd need the K version, and a Z97 motherboard. The H81's are okay to overclock the Pentium-K with, they are not a good choice for i5-K's and i7-K's.
Depending on when the H81 motherboard was manufactured, you may find that it doesn't have a recent BIOS for Devil's Canyon CPUs. If so, it won't POST. Suggest you go with a Z97 to eliminate these possible issues, and if you do intend to overclock later on, get a K chip.
For video editing, the more RAM the better. Even if you start off with 8GB to see how it goes, it might be wise to get a motherboard with four instead of two memory slots so you can add more RAM. Again, if you get a Z97 this will be covered.
You might want to use a scratch disk for video editing, eventually (another SSD - 250/500GB). But you can always add one in future, so doesn't need to go in straightaway.
The case doesn't bring USB 3.0 ports, just 2.0. Just an observation. Maybe not a bother for you that it doesn't have the newer/faster standard.
The GTX 970 is very expensive compared to rival cards like the R9 290 right now. Wasn't so long ago that people were paying £400-500 for a GTX 780, and then the (slightly) better GTX 970 arrived at £250-300. So I'd go/pay for what you actually need for the next year or two for gaming @ 1080p (something like a 280X), or a better one which is still also extremely good value for money like the 290.
New AMD/Radeon 300 series cards are expected in Q2 2015 if you aren't in a hurry.
