I have about £500 to spend on a decent camera, I have come across this one:

Canon POWERSHOT SX1 IS 10mp 20x Optical Zoom Digital Camera -£447.52

Is it any good? Are there better ones out there?

I know nothing about cameras/photogrpahy so hopefully you guys can help me out ?

No digital zoom is absolutely normal in any camera that is worth using. Digital zoom is generally only used where it's more practical or more cost-effective than optical zoom. Digital zoom does the same thing as zooming in on an image on-screen, hence you lose resolution.

I would spend some time reading up on photography before deciding what type of camera to buy. Or buy a cheap compact for now and see how you get on. What type of photography are you looking to do? If you're just dipping your toe then spending £500 is probably unnecessary.

Simple terms Kerplunk, optical zoom is worth having as it moves you closer to the subject.

Digital is not worth having as it makes the pixels [what make up the picture] bigger, which in turn makes the picture less sharp and good to look at.

I am in the same boat as you, i moved jobs and now find myself with no camera, the canon G10 is nice, but as the guys here say, should really look at a DSLR with a good starting lens. I am tempted by a Fuji S5.

I have a Fuji S5, awesome camera. The only things I'd swap it for are a D700, D3 and D3x. That should give you some idea of how highly I rate it. The only problem nowadays is finding one! I snagged mine for £425 from Calumet a year ago just after the prices were halved, but since then they've been like hens teeth...

I have one back home, but my mum is a wedding photographer, tried it once and wont give it back lol...

If i found one for 400 euros over here, even without a lens, id buy it! It is not as fast at clearing the buffer as some 'sport' cameras, but the images are fantastic. IMO.

If you're looking at spending ~£500, I'd be looking at second hand SLR's. The SX1 is a hideous price for a bridge - you'd be better off getting a panny LX3, or even something more low-end like an FZ28 if you want a bridge.

Get looking at a second hand DSLR and kit lens - there's often a few in the MM =)

people are suggesting DSLRs yet no one has actually asked the OP what he wants to shoot, how serious he wants to get and whether he wants a compact or a large bulky SLR.

If he wanted a compact he wouldn't be looking at the SX1. The SX1 is a large bridge - it's basically a DSLR with a fixed lens. An actual DSLR would be a better choice, whilst fitting in with what he's already loking at.

I am still non the wiser really, but I have decided to go for something cheaper, I got my eye on this:

Olympus MJU TOUGH-8000 12mp 3.6x Optical Zoom Digital Camera £217.98

Any good? I would be using it for general things, holidays, concerts (with good zoom ??)

hey kerplunk, I reckon you should get out to a shop and try some out. some of the bigger shops that sound like indian food have decent sections with the cameras powered up so you can try. if it's zoom you're after, a bridge camera should fit the bill, a general purpose camera i'd look at the panasonic fz-38, as that can also do HD video! About £300 ish so cheaper than your first choice...

3.6x optical is not good zoom. The IQ on that camera is meant to be fairly average, and the 28mm "wide" angle really isn't wide - at all.

You need to narrow down your requirements for us to recommend a camera - your first post states you've got upto £500, and looks at a bridge, but your last post lists a £200 compact..

I do have up to that, but someone said dont buy ssomething big and expensive if your not gonna fulfill it. So i want something cheaper, as im not into photography as such, but like to take a good photo ! if that makes sense ! :p

Is that panansonic SLR? I keep hearing SLr - What is it, should cameras have it?

For good zoom and relatively cheap then I would look towards the Panasonic Lumix TZ range... Those have around 10x Optical zoom if I recall. TZ6 or TZ7 should be around the £180 - £240 range. The only difference (from what I can see) is that the tz7 has HD video recording

12x on the TZ7, and a great Leica lens. It beats the pants off the Olympus posted earlier :)

The T7Z also uses the same function as the FZ28 - enabling you to reduce the amount of sensor used (ie lower MP) in order to get up to 24x optical. It's not something I use often as swapping IQ for massive zoom is very situational, but it works rather well.
