My Inno3D 8800GTX is factory overclocked at 595/1900, was playing COD4 yesterday and noticed some white triangular bits, it went away after I lowered clock and mem to default GTX clocks 575/1800. My GPU can hit 84 after a few hours of gaming.

How do I tell if artifacts are caused by GPU or mem clock?

Is it normal to have artifacts with pre-clocked cards? I heard BFG 8800GTX OC cards also have the same problems. Why do manufacturers pre OC their card without any improvement in terms of heatsink and card design?

return the card for a replacement. You've paid a premium for a pre-overclocked card and it artifacts. You can try reducing the clock on the memory, shaders and core independently if you want to work out what causes the problem.

Not sure if it's worth RMAing though, I have ordered an AC Xtreme 8800, will do some more tests tonight.

 Nope def not normal and if my BFG started i would RMA it for sure.

Fitted Arctic Cooling Accelero 8800, now idle at 37 and load temp after hours of COD4 is 45 as oppose to 84 last night. I can't believe it, 40 degrees difference!!!:D No more artifacts, definitely over heating problem. Anyone with an 8800GTX should get one, well worth 35 quid:p

Nice drop in temps!!! Should give it a nice bit of headroom if you wish to overclock :)

Just remember to keep all the bits from stock cooler in case of rma.

Yeah of course its normal, everyone who buys pre-overclocked cards has to downclock them from their stated overclocked speeds, as they artifact right out of the box. :p
