Is this computer good for games ?

Putting a PC together is easier than most flat pack furniture IMHO, you have to be pretty ham fisted to force something in the wrong slot backwards.

Take your time and it's fairly obvious where everything goes, if you have to force something it's probably wrong, have another internet connected device to hand and you'll find something to help with almost any questions you have.

The hardest part is probably picking the right components in the first place, which is where someone on here will make sure you don't go wrong.

Can't go wrong with building a PC bud, honestly, the parts are more durable than you think, honestly hit a motherboard with a hammer, no don't do that but yeah, unless you are very very heavy handed and try to force things, it is impossible to go wrong...well the 2nd/3rd attempt, you always forget something :p

10 years later and I still sometimes forget the CPU fan or even funnier, the power button :D

I have pretty much this exact same build, different RAM + HDD's and ofc the case is personal choice but the little i3 w/ a 7850 runs pretty much everything maxed @1080p, the odd game needs shadows/AA toned down.

Problem with this is, Haswell, the new chips are out in 5-6 weeks.

However at the end of the year, you can get yourself a second hand 3570k and sell on the i3, pretty much putting you good for another 2-3 years, then upgrading the gpu later on down the line will give you another year or 2.

Suppose you could go with a trinity build but I don;t think that has a very good upgrade path.

I had that same FX processor and graphics card before I recently upgraded to a new rig.
I can tell you that the i3 3220 seems so run games a lot smoother, I used to get stuttering with the FX and they seem to have issues with a couple of games (the Steam version of Crysis was a headache to get running).

For a graphics card I'd recommend the AMD 7770, as it can run almost all games maxed out at 1280 x 1024 / 720 without dropping lower than 30fps, so with your lower resolution you should see even better frames. Though if you can't stretch that far the 7750 should do nicely, though might it not be up to speed with DX11 games but you should still be able to play on high settings.

If you want prebuilt it will almost always cost more, but this seems pretty good for what you need

Add a 7770 and swap the hard drive for the WD Caviar blue (Much more reliable) and it comes to just over £500.

Alternatively get this one if you can spare the extra money, as the 7850 will blaze through games at that res and will keep you going for longer.

I've got an FX4100 and HIS 7850 IceQ and although I'm a newbie so don't know much, I'm getting 70-80FPS in BF3 with AA turned down a bit, everything else on max, Bioshock Infinite locked at 50fps with vsync on no problem and respectable Heaven 3 scores.

Keep reading bad things about the FX range which would have put me off if I had them first, but I seem to be doing ok so far.

I wouldn't say they're bad, in fact I thought they were awesome being an AMD fanboy and built 2 computers with them in. It's just that now I've tried the i3 everything seems to run a lot smoother (and cooler too) and they're roughly the same price.

Though I reckon the 8350 with water cooling would make a sweet setup and probably better up to its contender's but we're talking budget here.

Oh I just remembered my main gripe with the FX series, the stock cooler, the fan on it is horrible and makes annoyingly pitched noises. Intel stock cooler = much nicer, if you are gonna take the FX route I'd strongly recommend an aftermarket cooler.

Yeh I can definitely agree with that! The stock cooler is driving me nuts, especially as I'm using it as a HTPC as well. Payday Friday and I can't wait to order a different one!

After everything I've read when it's time to upgrade mobo and CPU (only had it a month lol) I think I would be tempted to try intel and see the difference, but for now, and especially for my noob useage, the FX4100 @ 4.4Ghz is doing the job as well as I need it to.
