So I'm minding my own, shooting around in multiplayer on CoD4 when my sound starts going funny and the game freezes for half a second, it continues to do until the screen has completely frozen. Music will play in the background, but the game has frozen. Using 169.04 drivers :(.

It could be your GPU locking up from overheating or too high an overclock. What temps are you reaching when gaming? It could also be the game itself, I think other people have had this game freezing on them.

A good place to start is to make sure you got all the latest drivers for your hardware, Nvidia just recently released a new WHQL driver.

If you have checked all the drivers etc, try running your rig at stock for a bit as it could be a sign of unstable overclock. Overclocking does usually mean the temp goes up with a fair bit so it could be a reason for overheating if that is the problem.

If you run everything on stock and still have the problems it could be that your hardware is starting to fail, but lets hope thats not the case.

Put everything back to stock and the problem occurs, but slower without an overclock. The sound will muggle up and the game will continue to play but will eventually crash.
