Is this easy to do in Flash?

yes it's easy.. or it can be hard depending on how complex you wish to make it.

i'm just working on something for someone else quickly and i'll sort you out some links/information :cool:

Cool that would be great. Ideally I would like it pull news items from a mySQL database but I have not touched flash at all and would like to learn... some book titles would be great.

What is the best version to learn? latest or an earlier one?

I'd say that AS2.0 (ActionScript v2.0) has the most tutorials and examples around. AS3.0 i know little about :o although from what i've seen it's not a big leap from AS2.0, if you can do one then you can do the other. Flash CS3 supports both AS2.0 and AS3.0 so if you have access to CS3, that's the app to get to grips with.
