It is and as the S3 uses ***** 4wd that is predominantly front wheel drive based. IE it's not a true system like a lancer or imprezza for example.

The Audi 4x4 system used in these cars (Haldex) is not a true (permanent) 4x4 system like that is used in Scooby's and Evo's.

The rear wheels only get power when the front's detect slip etc....

So permanent AWD then. Well it would be if I was driving
