i should try and keep my heart rate between 170-180 bpm when using the rowing machine.

This will ensure a good rate of cardio excercise without over exerting myself?

What i've been finding is that after about 10mins, i feel like crap and really don't want to go on. However, i've been told i should take a 10min rest, do some stretches, take on some water, and try and get on the rowing machine for about 20mins keeping my heart rate at 170-180?

Correct info, or complete rubbish?

i row 3/4 times a week for 20/30 mins, rowing is not easy you have to build yourself up, start at say 10 mins like you have , every second week add 5 mins, stick to good form -elbows in, and yes you will sweat like a ........ no matter how fit you are;),brilliant excercise imo and will add size to your arms/back/shoulders in no time, you will get the bit 'feeling like crap' almost everytime you extend your rowing time, its means you are doing something ;)

*edit , try not to grip the bar too hard (thats what beginners tend to do) ,you will know if you are because your forearms will blow up and fatigue to the point when you cant hold a beer can, this is not good news ;)

thanks for the advice mate. Some more help on form would be greatly appreciated.
How many stroekes do you do a minute, or how much distance do you cover in 10mins?

I found my arms getting too tired, so have lessened the resistance of the rope right down.

Anyone any opinions on the heart rate stuff?

good tips and help with from here

over half an hr i average around 1150 strokes, thats about 38/2 min you are getting tired because your body is not used to this exercise, rome wasna built in a day :D ,if you are getting tired then it is working.

You should be aiming to work between 60-80% of your max heart rate (max heart rate = 220-your age). So if you were 20years old you should be between 120 and 160 beats per min.
170-180 is pretty high.
Hope this helps.

This but a guide though and a rough one at that - best to assess your own if you are going to base your training on it.

The above would give me a max HR of 180, when in reality it is 210. I'm comfortable averaging around 160 for long distance, but can reach 180 if there are any hills without bothering myself too much.
