Is this normal!!!!!?

10/10 thread. Thanks for the lolz.

(Yes the game installs are normal, some do take a lot of space as you either download the full game or its copied from the disc, essentially the same thing.) Gone are the days of reading from the disc.

10/10 thread of the year. :). It installs to the hard drive as they have massivley faster data transfer and seek times.

Game data is on disc though

it loads the game data from your drive.

The PS4 / Xbox one just use the disc to transport the files to you, and save you downloading them from the internet.

You have to put the disc in as an anti piracy measure, not because it actually uses it. Have you noticed you can't hear it constantly spinning like you could on xbox 360 back in the day ?

Any game you play has to be first "installed" which means putting all the contents of the disc on your PS4 drive.

So in answer to your original question, yes it is normal. Time to either buy a bigger drive or start deleting games you aren't playing :)

Yeah, games keep data on the HDD now - do you remember on old consoles when you had little memory cards to keep save data on - now we have more capacity more information is kept on the hard drive, you can even install whole games on it. So, I guess you could just get an external hard drive if you're running out of room.

Rule of thumb: look at the back of the box.

If the amount of hard drive space required is a few thousand MB or is in GB (for the PS4 they'll be more in GB) then a mandatory install is required when running the game for the first time.
